In Hyrule Warriors, you can use flashy moves to battle solo on the field, but you're not always alone. Other Hylian soldiers as well as other Zelda characters are on the field battling and everyone's objectives will continuously change. Simple combo attacks will work on some enemies, but other will require some strategy, such as locking onto to enemies and waiting for an opening. Many gameplay elements are based on elements from the Zelda series. On the map, enemies are red and allies are blue. Squares on the map are keeps. Storm an enemy keep and defeat all the enemies to gain control over that keep, so you'll have more soldier bases. Controlling keeps is a good strategy for your army. Once a stage is completed, you'll get Rupees, see your score, and get items.

More difficult battles have increased probability of dropping weapons.
