Toad's Secret Stars

We didn't get the Stars the Toads on the second and third floors to see what they would say. I'll post the dialogue in a later post. The Toad on the second floorgives out hints about the rooms with Snowman's Land and Wet-Dry Land.
Star Get #147, 0 Coins, 4 Lives

The Toad on the third floor gives a hint about Tick Tock Clock.
Star Get #148, 0 Coins, 4 Lives

If you're looking for the other Toad, he's in the Hazy Maze Cave room.

Wing Mario Over the Rainbow - 8 Red Coins

This mission is unique to the N64.
To the left of Tick Tock Clock is a window with a hole. It will lead you to a frustrating Red Coin mission. Mario lands in the clouds and must do some serious cloud-hopping to get all 8 Red Coins. Fortunately, he gets the Wing Cap and some cannons. Failing into the void results in Mario dropping into the moat outside the castle, not taking any damage or losing a life. The slide music plays. This took me 25 attempts. A good strategy is to keep recharging your Wing Cap. The first Red Coin is on the cloud you land on. Get the Wing Cap and fly to the nearby translucent gray cloud for another Red Coin. You can't land on this cloud, so aim well. You might be able to circle back around to get it. Then land on the larger and lower of two pink platforms. There, ask the Bob-omb Buddy to open the cannon. There's a Red Coin there, as well. We use the higher cannon to fly over the cloud with the poles hanging from it, as there are two Red Coins there. We used a cannon again to reach the poles to get another Red Coin. Follow the rainbows to the remaining clouds with coins. The Star appears on the cloud you started on, so take a cannon there.
Star Get #112, 24 Coins, 18 Lives

Tick Tock Clock - Roll into the Cage

This is the 14th course.
This mission is unique to the N64.
We're on the second to last course! Now that we're finished with the second floor, we unlock the Star Door at the top of the stairs to reach the third floor. Ahead, we see a clock embedded in a tree, windows on both sides of the walls, and two sets of stairs leading to a Star Door behind us. To the right of the clock tree is Toad. He says, "There's something strange about that clock. As you jump inside, watch the position of the big hand. Oh, look what I found! here, Mario, catch!" This is the last of the Stars that Toad's been holding for us.
Star Get #104, 0 Coins, 11 Lives
We must enter the course through the clock. If the big hand is on 12, the clock parts will be stopped. When it's on 3, the hands will move, on 6, the parts will not move in sync, and on 9, they will move faster. There are also the numbers 12, 3, 6, and 9, so you can tell your relative location.

The slide music plays. We need the parts to move for this mission. Most of the moving parts are designed to flip or move you into the void, which is at the center of the clock. The course is shaped like a tube, so one false step will send you plummeting. Try to steer towards the walls so you'll land on something instead of fall into the void.

We jump past a pendulum to the grate serving as a ramp, leading to a conveyor belt. That leads to a block that will periodically rotate. These blocks will dip before flipping. Jump before they flip to stay on. In front of it is a pendulum blocking our way to the wall. Time your jump to make it to the other side. This leads to three of the blocks acting as stairs. After that is a piece of the wall that will push you to the center, possibly into the void. This leads to a grate platform, where you may see a clock hand moving in a circle. There is a conveyor belt leading to spinning circular platforms. After that is a conveyor belt into a cage with the Star.
Star Get #105, 3 Coins, 8 Lives

After a while, I got 100 Coins in this mission. It took me several tries because I had to have the parts moving to get to the top. Lots of item blocks contain coins, and there is a Blue Coin Switch. In the end, someone had to help me get the coins. Thanks to Brandon for helping me with this Star!
Star Get #111, 104 Coins, 4 Lives

Chief Chilly Challenge - Red Coins and Secret Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
The first Red Coin is over the abyss that the grate crosses. Before we get it, we get the Wario cap. Once across the abyss, we get the Metal Cap from the Power Flower. We cross the narrow strip of ice through the gusting winds. There is a black brick block on the other side. This time, it contains a Star.
Star Get #91, 11 Coins, 7 Coins
After getting the secret Star, we get the Metal Cap to go back. The second Red Coin is in the center of a square formation of coins. The gust will pick you up into the coins. I stood slightly off center to get the Red Coin. If you miss, jump back into the abyss to let the gust pick you up and put you on the ledge again. The ledge is much higher than the pond you land in. The third Red Coin is over the pond, closer to the abyss. A Bully knocked me into the abyss.
Take 2- I got the first three Red Coins as Luigi. The fourth is in the middle of the platform with the Bullies. The fifth and sixth ones are over the second and fourth moving ice blocks, respectively. If we climb partway up the mountain, we will find a Power Flower. As Luigi, we can use it to get the Red Coin in the cage at the base of the mountain, near the moving ice blocks. I carefully jumped down the mountain and got it. Around the corner is Mario's cap. With the Power Flower, we can float to the large piece of ice where the last Red Coin is. There is another Power Flower for the return flight. The Star appears near where you got Mario's cap.
Star Get #92, 31 Coins, 6 Lives
Exit the course when you're done.
The next Stars are the Red Coins and Switch Star of The Secret Under the Moat.

Big Boo Battle - Red Coins and Secret Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
I started this mission as Mario, entering Big Boo's Haunt on a later mission. (Any mission but the first one will work.)
The first Red Coin is across from the entrance in the carousel. The next two are in the second room. It will take some time to get all of the Red Coins, as some of them will send you on the incorrect path. The next two are in the third room. As Mario, use the Power Flower to get the one floating high in the corner. Two more are in the fourth room. Pick up the Wario cap here. In the fifth room, the entrance to the battle, there is a black brick block with the 8th Red Coin. The Star will appear in the same room, nearby.
Star Get #90, 35 Coins, 6 Lives
I returned later to get the Secret Star. In the room with the entrance to the battle, you'll see a Star on the Touch Screen Map. Despite searching for it, it doesn't seem possible to reach. In the room with the Power Flower, there is a Luigi cap (if you're not Luigi). As Luigi, with the Vanish Cap, run through the rooms, long-jumping to the doors you need to go through. The Vanish Cap does not last long. Run across the fallaway bridge, or long-jump if need be, then jump into the Boo painting. There is a hidden room behind the painting wiht a secret Star.
Star Get #93, 0 Coins, 5 Lives
Just exit the course afterward.
The next Stars are the Red Coins and Secret Star in Chief Chilly Challenge.

Chief Chilly Challenge - The Key to Wario

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
On the second floor, through the door with the high arch and the red carpet are the entrance to Snowman's Land and a wall of mirrors. We're not going there just yet, however. If we look to the right, there is another painting of Luigi that we can't enter. In the reflection, is a painting of Wario. Ordinarily, we can't get to the Wario painting, but if we bring Luigi into the room, we find some Power Flowers on the posts. Using them, Luigi can walk through the mirrors to the other side. We can now enter the Wario painting.
We find ourselves in a snowy course with the Cool, Cool Mountain music. We land on an icy platform and slide down the slide. The slide ends at a large gap to the abyss. Strong gusts of wind help propell us to the next icy platform with some Bullies. We run past the Bullies and hop across four tilting square platforms, passing another Bully, before taking a ride on a grate. We pass a Red Coin, because we can't get them all just yet.
The path splits, so we can go either left or right. The sign warns us about going left, saying "HIGH WIND WARNING! You'll be blown away unless you put on some weight!" We go to the right, ride a gust into some coins, and land in an icy lake. We must get out quickly to avoid taking damage. This water will not restore your health meter. We pass the group of Bullies and negotiate the moving, slippery platforms. Take your time here. Next are some moving steps and some snowmen, leading to the entrance to the battle arena, which is a large hole at the top of the moving steps. I died once thinking there was a Star on an island, but there wasn't one.
We meet Chief Chilly, a large icy Bully. He says "You there with a mustache! I am the king of cold, Chief Chilly. I lock up anyone who challenges the superiority of my 'stache. In fact, I locked up one such fellow just the other day. Hmm. What a sad, mangy mustache you've got there. It hardly seems worth it to destroy you. With a 'stache like that, you're clearly hte sidekick, not the star. But I'm between meetings now, so I might as well. In the battle for the best mustache, I'll win, hairs down. Ha ha ha! Bring it on, peach fuzz!"
Dealing with Chief Chilly is the same for the Big Bully: lure him to the edge, then push him off. It may work to do the jump kick to knock him into the water. The arena is a disc of ice over extremely icy water, which will do as much damage as lava if you fall in. We push him off once, and he hops around the arena in pain, knocking off a section of the arena's edge with each hop, making the arena smaller. We got in the second hit, and he takes out an even larger part of the arena. When he lands again, the arena will tilt. I fell in the water when I pushed him to the edge, but he hung on and recovered. He pushed me into the water. I slid into the water after pushing him, and died.
Take 2- I got in the first two hits without incident. When he landed and the platform tilted, I glitched through the platform and fell in the water, then he pushed me in twice. I died.
Take 3- I fell in while he did, fell in again because I didn't land on the platform, then landed on the section of the platform as it fell into the water.
Take 4- I got in the first two hits easily, fell in the water twice, and got it the last hit barely avoiding falling in. Chief Chilly says "No way! I lost to such a scrawny guy like that...? Hmmm, did I not groom my mustache well enough? I must hurry hoome and condition it... Farewell!" He disappears and a key with a "W" and a Wario hat appears in the center of the arena. Luigi poses with a "Ha ha!" and the key.
23 Coins, 4 Lives
Now we can get Wario! But before we do, as Luigi, we can use the Power Flower to get a Secret Star. We run through the mirror to the door in the reflection. We can go through the door to a white room. There is a Star there. We can't see the boundaries of the room, but Luigi will run into them.
Star Get #81, 4 Lives
Once we leave the white room, we can walk through the mirrors unaided. Time to free Wario! We unlock the door and Wario flips out with a "Waaaaah! Wario!" We get a message: "You've rescued Wario! Now he can smash up bad guys in style. Select Wario when you enter a course and set off on an adventure. You finally have all four heroes assembled! Now only Princess Toadstool remains!"
We need Wario to get the Stars we skipped. His punch sends enemies flying. When he uses the Power Flower, it becomes the Metal Cap. He can also break black brick blocks, which frequently hide Star Switches. We have all of the characters at our disposal so now we can get every Star!
The next Star is Through the Jet Stream (Jolly Roger Bay).

Vanish Cap Under the Moat - 8 Red Coins

This mission is unique to the N64.
If we go through the wood door to the right of the door to the Hazy Maze Cave in the basement, we will find a flooded tunnel. After swimming to the other side, we find a sign saying "It is decreed that one shall pound the pillars." There are two pillars nearby sticking out from the water. We pound them both once, hear a chime, and the water drains. We can now go through the door to the outside. Once we go through the door, we find the moat mostly drained. We walk towards the waterfall and find a hole in the ground. We go into the hole and into another area.
We get a message when we land: "Welcome to the Vanish Cap Switch Course! All of the blue blocks you find will become solid once you step on the Cap Switch. You'll disappear when you put on the Vanish Cap, so you'll be able to elude enemies and walk through many things. Try it out!" We will! When we land, Mario is grainy and fuzzy, which means, we can pass through enemies like they weren't there. The first 4 Red Coins are down the slide in front of us. The Red Coins are on ledges, so we want to slide slowly to get them and jump to other ledges. We must start on the left side of the slide (when facing it) and slide for the first Red Coin. We move about 1/3 to the right for the second. The third and fourth are in the center and on the right side of the slide. There are also 3 1-ups on the slide. Once we reach the bottom of the slide, we dodge flaming orbs and run around the corner. Coins 5-7 are over elevators that flip at the top. The last one was difficult to negotiate as it is going in the opposite direction of the others. I fell off here several times. If you do fall off, you will exit from the waterfall without losing a life. Around this time, the Vanish Cap may be running out. After the last elevator, the Vanish Cap Switch is nearby. The last Red Coin is on a platform nearby and the Star is in a cage with only an opening at the bottom. We can't get to it normally, so we step on the Vanish Cap Switch. We get a message: "You've just stepped on the Vanish Cap Switch. The Vanish Cap makes Mario disappear. Now Vanish Caps will pop from all of the blue blocks you find! Would you like top Save? Yes/No"
We hit the blue block nearby for a translucent cap. We turn grainy before Mario actually puts the cap on his head. we walk through the cage for the Star.
Star Get #58, 23 Coins, 23 Lives

Battle Fort - The Secret of Battle Fort

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
We go through the wooden doorway from the foyer into a long hallway, where a large Boo waits. It moves to the back of the hallway. The door there leads to the courtyard, where a lot of Boos hang out. Not much has changed from the N64 version, except that some Boos have Red Coins and there are bricks near the right wall. Underneath the bricks ia grate. We punch the bricks with Mario because Yoshi can't break bricks. Doing so reveals a hole, which takes us to the Battle Fort. The slide music starts playing. We see five Silver Stars on the map. One of them is hidden the corner brick in the corner to the right of where we landed. We take a hit from a Goomba and chase after our Silver Star, recovering it quickly. Another one is hidden in the Goomba near the pole at the base of the fort. There is another Silver Star hidden in a brick closest to the corner to the left of where we started. The fourth one we found was in the corner across from where we started, a Goomba near the corner bricks. The last one we found was at the top of the pole on the opposite side of the grate bridge. We missed it at first and took fall damage. In the corner where we started, on the top level, is the Star Sphere with the Star. We crossed the bridge quickly and carefully to get it.
Star Get #36, 8 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Boos' 8 Red Coins.

Goomboss Battle - The Switch Star

This is a mission unique to the Nintendo DS.
There are other missions to complete inside the Mario painting. If we go in as Mario, we can complete one of these missions. We slide down the trunk and head to the right. We land in the haze and take damage. We walk up the narrow slope and take out the Piranha Plant. We jump across three of the four gray tilting platforms and land near where we came in. We take out the Goombas to clear the runway. At the end is a tall metal cage with a Heart. We need to reach the top of the cage, so we need to do wall-jumps (wall kicks). A sign near the cage explains "Hop onto high places with the wall kick. Just jump at a wall, then jump again when you hit the wall. Keep in mind that only the superhero with the red cap can pull this move off." Near the Star Switch is another sign: "In front of you is a Star Switch. Step on it to make a Star appear in the course. Hurry to collect the Star before it disappears! Don't forget that you can check the Star's location on the Touch Screen map."
We step on the Star Switch and the Star appears at the top of the ledge inside the metal cage. We run to the cage and wall jump up until we land on the grassy ledge. We run to the Star Sphere and break it for the Star. We get a message: "Wow! Another Power Star! You're getting stronger from the power of the castle. Do you want to save? You bet / Not now
Star Get #35, 6 Coins, 7 Lives
Since we are not warped out, we decide to see how Goomboss is doing. After falling in the haze and being hit by a Goomba, we fall into the trunk to see Goomboss. He says "You're Mario!!! What are you doing here?! My underlings locked you up in that room. Never mind. I'll deal with you myself! Now I will trample you as you have trampled us!"
The Goombas appear in front of him this time, so we can punch them into Goomboss. We get trampled by Goomboss, taking four bars of damage. We fell into the haze trying to get aroung them, but punched two Goombas into him. We run into Goomboss, but get in a hit from behind. We take more damage, but get in the last hit we need. Goomboss says "Aaaaauuuuuuurrghhh! I am so angry I am cooking in my own succulent juices! The Goombas have lost... Again?! Is this our destiny?! To be trampled by oppressive feet for all eternity? No, we will definitely triumph next time! Yes, next time! The Goombas' fate is not defeat, but perseverance!"
He explodes into the key once again. We get the key and warp out. We can't do anything special with the key because we already unlocked the door.
The next Star is the Secret of Battle Fort.

The Princess's Secret Slide

N64
Through the top door to the right from the foyer is a tower with three stain-glass windows of the Princess. There is a note from Peach that says "Mario!! My castle is in great peril. I know that Bowser is the cause... and I know that only you can stop him! The doors in the castle that have been sealed by Bowser can be opened only with Star Power. But there are secret paths in the castle that Bowser hasn't found. One of those paths is in this room. and it holds one of the castle's Secret Stars! Find that Secret Star, Mario! It will help you on your quest. Please, Mario, you have to help us! Retrieve all of the Power Stars in the castle and free us from this awful prison! Please!"
Okay, Peach. We're working on it. The window to the right holds the Secret Slide. The slide music starts playing. We land in a room at the top of the slide and trigger the Blue Coin Switch to the right. We start sliding down the slide, which loops around frequently and loses its guard rails. I make it to the end with a time of 0'29"9. There is a Star in the item block.
Star Get #30, 80 Coins, 4 Lives
We get a message: "You've recovered 30 Power Stars! Now you can open the door with the big Star! But before you move on, how is it going other wise? Did you pound the two columns down? You didn't lose your hat, did you? If you did, you'll have to stomp on the condor to get it back! They say that Bowser has sneaked out of the Sea and into the underground. Have you finally cornered him?"
The answers to the questions are "It's going fine" for the first question and "No" to the rest. This is what happens when you try to get as many Stars as possible before taking on Bowser.
If we go into the Secret Slide again, we can get another Star if we reach the end in under 21 seconds. We do so with a time of 0'20"8. We're cutting it close here. To go faster, push the control stick forward and avoid touching edges or walls. There is a point where the slide doubles over on itself. If you jump off at the right spot, you can skip part of the slide, shedding seconds off your time. This is easier to line up with the DS's Touch Screen map. We didn't risk the jump. If you, at any point, reach the end of the slide in under 21 seconds, the Star will appear just as you cross the finish line. Get that Star first, if you haven't gotten the one in the item block. Getting either Star will cause you to warp back to the foyer and have to slide again.
Star Get #31, 25 Coins, 4 Lives

Nintendo DS
We go into the room with the four bordered doors and the stain-glass windows. There are only two windows here, but the slide is in the one on the right. The sign says "My castle is in great peril!! I know it's because of Bowser again. Will he never tire of terrorizing us? He stole the castle's Power Stars and disappeared into the walls along with us! Retrieve all of the Power Stars from the walls and the paintings in the castle. Here is a hint: there are secret paths in this room, and one of them leads to a Secret Star! Find the Secret Star! It will help you on your quest."
We jump into the window and land at the top of the slide with the slide music playing. We hit the Blue Coin Switch and start sliding. We get lots of coins and a 1-up. We reach the end with a time of 0'20"72, so the Star appears as we cross the finish line. We get that one and ignore the one in the item block.
Star Get 33, 63 Coins, 5 Lives
We jump in again to get the Star in the item block. We hit the Blue Coins Switch, get lots of coins and another 1-up. We finish with a time of 0'24"83. We hit the item block for the Star.
Star Get #34, 71 Coins, 7 Lives
The next Star is the Switch Star in Goomboss Battle.

Sunshine Isles - Five Silver Stars

This is a mission exclusive to the Nintendo DS. After getting 15 Stars, it's about time to explore the door on the top right. When we enter the room, we see five double doors, one bordered in green with an L, a red one with an M, a regular set of doors, a yellow one with a W, and a white one. They each have a rug of the same color. There are also two stain glass windows of Princess Peach. If we approach the bordered doors, we get a message as well as hear Bowser's laugh. For the door with the M: "It's locked... Someone is calling for help on the other side." For the door with the L: "It's locked... Someone is shrieking on the other side." For the door with the W: "It's locked... Someone is growling on the other side." For the door with the white border: "It's locked... Everything is quiet on the other side." Since we can't open any of these doors, we go through the normal double doors. Inside is a colorful room with toys, a piano, a table with drawings, a large set of drawers, a painting, a door marked 8, and Toad. Toad says "Oh, no! Oh, no! I lost the keys to Princess Toadstool's secret drawer! She's going to chew me out big-time! Will you find the keys for me, Yoshi? This is just between you and me, but you can open the drawer when you have a key. The drawer leads to the Rec Room, where Princess Toadstool used to play games as a child. When you've found a key, you can go inside and play more minigames. Just select Rec Roo from the Title Screen to play." This is how we unlock and play minigames. We need to find the keys to unlock the drawers. The keys are being held by bunnies, who will now appear throughout the castle and the grounds. If we catch them, they will give us their key.
If we touch the painting it jiggles, which means there is a world inside it. It's a painting of islands with palm trees. Let's go in!
When we land, we hear the music from Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine. The world has six islands. If we check the map, we see Silver Stars, one of which is moving. Let's go get them! There is one on the island that is two islands to the left of where we start. Moving clockwise, there is another one on the next island with a Goomba. Lakitu appeared and I took a hit from the Goomba. Yoshi ate Lakitu and turned him into an egg. He drops Spinies, so beware. Throwing an egg at a Spiny makes lots of coins. The Silver Star is at the top of the palm tree. Nearby in the center island is a little cave where another Silver Star is hiding on the ground. We come across a condor called Klepto carrying a Silver Star. We chase Klepto around, and jump for him to knock the Star out of his talons. We then chase the Star around and get it. The last Silver Star is at the top of the center island. The Star appears in the Star sphere where we started. There is a coin on one of the other islands and an item block with a Koopa shell on the other. We break the Star Sphere and get the Star. It's another Secret Star!
Star Get #16, 26 Coins, 4 Lives
The next mission is Goomboss Battle.

The Secret Aquarium - 8 Red Coins

N64
We open the door with the 3 on it the right of Whomp's Fortress. It's a peaceful room with a couple of aquariums. On the left and right walls are two nooks. The one on the left has a 1-up and the other has the entrance to a secret course. Soothing, peaceful music plays as we find ourselves underwater (this is the version of the underwater music with the more uptempo beat). Swimming is like flying with the Wing Cap: press up to dive and down to surface. There are several coins, but there is nowhere to surface for air. With every passing moment, our Power Meter ticks down, but we can recover our health with coins, 1 bar for Yellow Coins, 2 for Red Coins, and 5 for Blue Coins. The windows are tinted with the colors of the towers in the Wing Cap Course. What's in here? There is a school of harmless fish, that won't affect you in any way. There is also a blue horizontal star, which means there are 8 Red Coins to get! Four of them are in the center of coin rings. The other for are on the floor of the aquarium in the corners. The are less than 100 coins here, so don't worry about getting the rest for another Star. Once we got all 8 Red Coins, the Star appeared in the center of the aquarium, on the floor.
Star Get #16, 28 Coins, 7 Lives

Nintendo DS
I entered the door to the right of Whomp's Fortress and got the 1-up in the left nook. I then entered the Secret Aquarium. The Red Coins are in the same place as in the N64 version. Soon, I had all 8 Red Coins and the Star.
Star Get #12, 22 Coins, 5 Lives
We get a message: "You've recovered 12 Power Stars! Now you can open the door with the big Star! But Bowser is just ahead... And is that the sound of the princess calling for help?"
We can't battle Bowser just yet, nor do I want to. I want to get as many Stars as possible before I tackle Bowser.
The next Star is Plunder in the Sunken Ship.

Wing Cap Course - 8 Red Coins

N64
After we get 10 Stars, we find a light shining down in the foyer on the sun on the floor near the entrance to the castle. We zoom in for a close-up look and look up to where the light is coming from. This transports us into the Wing Cap Course! We see Mario wearing a cap with wings in the air where four towers stand. One of my favorite remixes of the Starman theme plays. We get the following message: "Welcome to the Wing Cap Course! Step on the red switch at the top of the tower, in the center of the rainbow ring. When you trigger the switch, all of the red blocks you find will become solid. Try out the Wing Cap! Do the Triple Jump to take off and press Z to land. Pull back on the Control Stick to go up and push forward to nose down, just as you would when flying an airplane."

I love how they assume you know how to fly a plane and how that works. You could just fly down to the tower in the center where the switch is, but there's a Star here, too. There are 8 Red Coins surrounded by coin rings in the air. Just follow the path of coins to get them. This is easier said than done. I tried to get the Red Coins, but I missed some and dropped out of the sky 4 times. The Wing Cap doesn't really allow you to gain altitude, so you are slowly descending. If you miss one of the first 6 coins while trying to get all 8, just start over. You won't be able to reach them again. If you fall, you just land in the moat near the castle without losing a life. Just go back into the castle and try again. On my fifth try, I got 7 Red Coins, but missed the last one on the lowest ring. I steered for the center tower and tripped the Red Switch. I got the message: "You've stepped on the Wing Cap Switch. Wearing the Wing Cap, you can soar through the sky. Now Wing Caps will pop out of all the red blocks you find. Would you like to Save? Yes/No"

The Slide music starts playing after the Wing Cap runs out. I hit the red block near the switch, look for the lowest coin ring, triple jumped and got the 8th Red Coin. The Star appeared over the center tower. As we land back in the foyer, we are told that this is one of the castle's secret Stars.
Star Get #11, 24 Coins, 4 Lives
