After the Final Battle

N64
We get the large Power Star. It becomes a Wing Cap and Mario circles the arena, until he falls from the sky, lands in front of the castle bridge, and the Wing Cap fades. The large Power Star flies up to the stain glass window of Peach and she appears, in her original pink dress, hands over her heart, eyes closed, and hair down. (If we look closely, we can see Yoshi on the roof.) She lands on the bridge, between two Toads. Mario runs up to her and takes off his hat. She wakes up and says "Mario! The Power of the Stars is restored to the castle... and it's all thanks to you! Thank you, Mario! We have to do something special for you." She kisses him on the nose and he nods, putting his cap back on, with a "Here we go!" Peach says, "Listen, everybody! Let's bake a delicious cake... for Mario." Peach and the Toads walk to the castle, while Mario lingers, looking at the sky. Peach calls "Mario!" and he goes inside. The credits roll, showing places we've been and friends and enemies we've met. At the end, we see a cake with Mario and Peach figurines surrounded by a tea setting. A bar of chocolate on the cake says "THANK YOU"
THE END

The cannon outside the castle is now open. We launch to the roof, where we find three 1-ups and Yoshi, who says "Mario!!! It that really you??? It has been so long since our last adventure! They told me that I might see you if I waited here, but I'd just about given up hope! It is true? have you really beaten Bowser? And restored the Stars to the castle? And saved the Princess? I knew you could do it! Nwo I have a very special message for you. "Thanks for playing Super Mario 64! This is the end of the game, but not the end of the fun. We want you to keep playing, so we ahve a little something for you. We hope that you like it! Enjoy!!!" The Super Mario 64 Team"
We get 99 Lives. Yoshi jumps off the roof with a sparkly Triple Jump. We get a new Triple Jump as well.

If we go back into Cool, Cool, Mountain's Big Penguin Race, we find the penguin much larger than we last saw him. He says, "What's up, pal? I haven't been on the slide lately, so I'm out of shape. Still, I'm always up for a good race... Especially against an old sleddin' buddy! Whaddya say? Ready...set... Go!/ No thanks" He is faster and obscures the track. He says the same thing when you win as earlier.

Nintendo DS
We get the large Power Star. It becomes a Wing Cap and Mario flies around the arena. He falls from the sky, and lands in front of the castle bridge, next to Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario. The Wing Cap's power fades. The large Power Star appears (as well as some twinkling on the Touch Screen). The camera focuses on the stain-glass window of Peach. She appears from the window, hair in a ponytail. Stars appear on the Touch Screen. She floats gently down to the bridge, eyes closed, hands clasped. She is wearing her updated dress. Yoshi runs up to her and stands beside her. Mario walks up to her and takes off his hat. Luigi and Wario walk up. The Stars on the Touch Screen move in a circle. Peach wakes up and says "Oh! Yoshi! The Power of the Stars is restored to the castle... and it's all thanks to you! Thank you all! We have to do something special for you!" She kisses Mario on the nose, he nods, and puts his cap back on, saying "Here we go!" Peach says, "Listen... Let's bake a delicious cake... ...for my heroes!" All of them walk into the castle, except Yoshi, who lingers to look at the sky. Peach calls to him "Yoshi!" and he goes inside the castle.

The credits roll, showing us where we've been. All of the courses and some of the enemies and friends we've met. On the Touch Screen, we see a cake, which is slowly decorated through the credits. All of the characters you've unlocked will appear as figurines on the cake. Yoshi, Mario, Wario, Luigi, and Peach stand on the cake. All the characters wave goodbye from the bridge and Lakitu flies off. We then see the cake with some tea settings. The cake has a bar of chocolate that says "THANK YOU".
THE END

The cannon outside the castle will now be open. If we go on the roof, we'll find three 1-ups and a Power Flower or Wing Cap.

Rainbow Ride - Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow

Rainbow Ride is the 15th and final course in the game. It is very spread out and floats over the void. It is accessed via the hole in the window to the left of Tick Tock Clock.

N64
Rainbow Ride is a difficult course due to the number of ways you can fall off platforms. It's also not obvious where everything is and where you need to go. The slide music plays. We land on a yellow platform and walk to the carpet ahead. It is a flying carpet that will follow the rainbow path in front of it. When the rainbow ends, the carpet falls into the void, so get off of it before then. This carpet circles around a large spinning circular rock with an Amp. There is also a fire-spewing rock that may force you to jump off the carpet to the rock, unless you time it well. But get back on the carpet immediately: if you're not on it for a while, it will flicker, then disappear and you may be stuck where you are. It will regenerate where you first found it. You can jump on it while it is flickering to make it solid again. The first carpet will take you to fours more circular spinning rocks. Jump off the carpet, as there is a gap between where the carpet stops and the next platform begins. Here you'll find Lakitu throwing Spinies your way. You can try to take him out (for 10 coins), but you won't be hanging around here for very long. These four spinning stones can be thought of as the hub of Rainbow Ride. There are Stars to get to the left, to the right, and straight ahead from here. For this Star, we need to go right. This will take you to another carpet, which will have you climbing on rectangular prism platforms to avoid being knocked off (but you don't have to take action for all of them). The path for the carpet will curve, so it may be good to adjust the camera. Up next is a platform with a brick block. You have a limited amount of time, so either go around (or over) it or break it. The carpet will come to the end of the path, where you'll find two more carpets, which will go in opposite directions. We need the carpet on the left. Around this point, you'll hear a sound that is the oars of the Cruiser rowing. Take a quick look at it; you'll soon have more obstacles to dodge. The path will begin to spiral around a stone that resembles a top. Blue fire will come out of its base, which usually isn't a problem. As the carpet climbs, you'll see the platform has two arms that will try to knock you off when you get high enough. The carpet ride ends at some dropaway platforms. Quickly backflip up to the next level, where you'll find a plank to the Cruiser, a large ship with rowing feather oars. On the ship, a strong wind is blowing to the stern. At the bow is the Star. Walk against the wind to get it. (Or have a Bob-omb push you partway).
Star Get #113, 9 Coins, 12 Lives

Nintendo DS
Not much has changed from the N64 version for this mission, except for some updated sprites. We take the first flying carpet to the hub, dodging fire. We go to the right and take another carpet, this time with more platforms to catch us. The path forks ahead and we take the carpet to the left. The platform that looks like a top no longer spews fire, but will still try to knock you off the carpet. The sound of the Cruiser's oars rowing is much clearer. As the carpet spirals, you get a great view of the course. I fell off the dropaway platform.
Take 2- I made it past the dropaway platforms and boarded the Cruiser using the plank. The gusts are too strong here for us to reach the Star at the bow. Conveniently, there is a Wario Cap and a Power Flower aboard. At the top of the mast, above the crow's nest, we can get a 1-up. We use the Metal Cap to get a 1-up at the bow, as well as the Star.
Star Get #138, 15 Coins, 8 Lives'

I later returned to get 100 Coins. There are several Blue Coins from the Blue Coin Switch in the maze with Red Coins. I got the Red Coins and coins from the swings and triangles. I got the last coins on the carpet rides to the big house.
Star Get #119, 102 Coins, 4 Lives

Over the Rainbows - 8 Red Coins and Secret Star

This mission is based off of the N64 mission Mario Wings Over the Rainbow.
To the left of Tick Tock Clock is the window with hole to this Secret Star. We need to be Mario for these missions so we can use the Wing Cap. The first Red Coin is on the cloud we start on. We follow a rainbow to the next Red Coin on the cloud below the higher gray cloud. Next we fly to a lower cloud with a tree and a black brick block. I dove too low and hit a platform, causing me to fall. We land in the moat, unharmed.
Take 2- I got the first Red Coin. Then, I flew to the cloud under the cloud with the poles for another Red Coin. Next was the larger pink platform to get the Bob-omb Buddy to open the cannon and get another Red Coin. I got a 1-up at the top of the pole. I used the cannon and got the Red Coin on the cloud with the tree because I missed the other cannon. I used the lower cannon to reach the higher cannon. The 5th and 6th Red Coins I got were on top of the cloud with poles. The next Red Coin was on the other cloud near the lower cannon. The last Red Coin was under one of the poles. The Star appeared on the cloud we started on. There are no Red coins in gray clouds.
Star Get #136, 24 Coins, 7 Lives

We jump back in for the other Secret Star. As you may have noticed, there is a black brick block on a cloud and Wario's cap on the platform with the lower cannon. As Mario, we fly down to the lower cannon and pick up Wario's Cap. We use the cannon to reach the cloud with the tree, aiming so that only a little of the cloud is below the viewing screen so we'll hit the tree. We break the brick block for the Star.
Star Get #137, 2 Coins, 7 Lives

Tick Tock Clock - Time Jumps on Moving Bars

N64
We need time in for this mission, which makes it difficult. We go past the spinning triangles to the right, go up the two flipping blocks, and over the cage where the Star is. The entrance to the cage is next to three pop-out walls that try to push you away. We have to climb them to get into the cage. It's a little tricky because they're moving, but possible.
Star Get #110, 4 Coins, 6 Lives

Nintendo DS
You'll want to enter the course as Wario with time stopped. The cage is in the same area, but the entrance is blocked by a black brick block. We go right at the top of the pole and backflip to the path from the yellow rectangles. At the top of the flipping blocks is a grate that forms the cage that holds the Star. I ground-pounded the black bricj block to open the entrance, walked in, and got the Star.
Star Get #133, 9 Coins, 4 Lives

Tall, Tall Mountain - Breathtaking View from (the) Bridge

N64
I tried getting 100 coins here, but gave up after losing several lives. Near the mountain peak, on the narrow bridge, we can see an alcove in the rock behind the waterfall. I jumped from the left side of the bridge to reach the alcove, which contains a Star. You can also long-jump or create a block in front of the alcove with the switch near the meshy vines.
Star Get #94, 19 Coins, 6 Lives

Nintendo DS
Once again, I decided to enlist the help of Hoo, after falling off the mountain. He took us to the peak. The Star is in an alcove behind the waterfall, as in the N64 version. This time, however, the Star is blocked by a black brick block, so we need Wario to get this Star. Conveniently, Wario's Cap is at the peak as well. There is a bridge to the alcove so reaching it is easier. We break the brick block to get the Star.
Star Get #119, 0 Coins, 4 Lives

The Secret Under the Moat - Red Coins and Switch Star

This mission is a modified version of Vanish Cap Under the Moat for the Nintendo DS.
We need to drain the moat to access this area in the same way as in the N64 version: go through the wooden door next to the door to Hazy Maze Cave, swim through the tunnel and pound each pillar once. The sign says the same thing as in the N64 version. The water will drain, allowing us to open the metal door which leads to the drained moat of the castle. Near the waterfall is a black brick block, so we need Wario to break it. Breaking it reveals a hole to the area under the moat. We must start the area as Wario, because going into the castle to swap out characters will cause the brick block to regenerate.
With the Touch Screen Map, we can see where we need to slide to get the Red Coins. The first two steps have Red Coins, the third has a 1-up in a block, and the fourth has a Power Flower. The step directly below the Power Flower has a Red Coin, as does the step to the right. The step to the left has another 1-up, which I did not get. (I also did not get the 1-up at the top of the slide in the right corner.) At the bottom of the slide are several flaming orbs, as well as a Power Flower. Arouond the corner are an Amp and Mario's cap. We change into Mario for easier maneuvering. Next come the series of elevators. After the first elevator is a tilting ramp with two Red Coins. After that are two elevators moving in opposite directions, which calls for careful platforming so you do not get flipped off. Jump to the other platform of the same elevator before it flips, then jump down to the next elevator. The next Red Coin is in front of the last elevator. After we get off the elevator, there is a Luigi cap, a Power Flower, and the last Red Coin. The Star appears in the nearby cage. We put on the Luigi cap, use the Vanish Cap, and run through the cage to get the Star.
Star Get #94, 26 Coins, 5 Lives

Getting the Star puts us outside the level, so we go back into the course to get the Switch Star. We quickly slid down the slide and got the Mario cap. At the base of the slide is the Power Flower we need to float along the wall on the left side of the slide. Soon, you'll find a vertical maze. Don't float to the top, because all you'll find is the Star Sphere. We step on the switch and get the Power Flower and float to the top of the maze, recharging in the middle. Towards the top is a 1-up. It took me a few tries, but I got the Star. I released the Power Flower before tripping the switch to save time.
Star Get #95, 34 Coins, 6 Lives
The next Star is Snowman's Big Head.

Chief Chilly Challenge - Red Coins and Secret Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
The first Red Coin is over the abyss that the grate crosses. Before we get it, we get the Wario cap. Once across the abyss, we get the Metal Cap from the Power Flower. We cross the narrow strip of ice through the gusting winds. There is a black brick block on the other side. This time, it contains a Star.
Star Get #91, 11 Coins, 7 Coins
After getting the secret Star, we get the Metal Cap to go back. The second Red Coin is in the center of a square formation of coins. The gust will pick you up into the coins. I stood slightly off center to get the Red Coin. If you miss, jump back into the abyss to let the gust pick you up and put you on the ledge again. The ledge is much higher than the pond you land in. The third Red Coin is over the pond, closer to the abyss. A Bully knocked me into the abyss.
Take 2- I got the first three Red Coins as Luigi. The fourth is in the middle of the platform with the Bullies. The fifth and sixth ones are over the second and fourth moving ice blocks, respectively. If we climb partway up the mountain, we will find a Power Flower. As Luigi, we can use it to get the Red Coin in the cage at the base of the mountain, near the moving ice blocks. I carefully jumped down the mountain and got it. Around the corner is Mario's cap. With the Power Flower, we can float to the large piece of ice where the last Red Coin is. There is another Power Flower for the return flight. The Star appears near where you got Mario's cap.
Star Get #92, 31 Coins, 6 Lives
Exit the course when you're done.
The next Stars are the Red Coins and Switch Star of The Secret Under the Moat.

Big Boo Battle - Red Coins and Secret Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
I started this mission as Mario, entering Big Boo's Haunt on a later mission. (Any mission but the first one will work.)
The first Red Coin is across from the entrance in the carousel. The next two are in the second room. It will take some time to get all of the Red Coins, as some of them will send you on the incorrect path. The next two are in the third room. As Mario, use the Power Flower to get the one floating high in the corner. Two more are in the fourth room. Pick up the Wario cap here. In the fifth room, the entrance to the battle, there is a black brick block with the 8th Red Coin. The Star will appear in the same room, nearby.
Star Get #90, 35 Coins, 6 Lives
I returned later to get the Secret Star. In the room with the entrance to the battle, you'll see a Star on the Touch Screen Map. Despite searching for it, it doesn't seem possible to reach. In the room with the Power Flower, there is a Luigi cap (if you're not Luigi). As Luigi, with the Vanish Cap, run through the rooms, long-jumping to the doors you need to go through. The Vanish Cap does not last long. Run across the fallaway bridge, or long-jump if need be, then jump into the Boo painting. There is a hidden room behind the painting wiht a secret Star.
Star Get #93, 0 Coins, 5 Lives
Just exit the course afterward.
The next Stars are the Red Coins and Secret Star in Chief Chilly Challenge.

Goomboss Battle - Red Coins

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
Now that we have Wario, we can gather all of the Red Coins in this course. I started the course as Mario. After moving past the rising stumps, taking poison damage on the way, we come across a platform moving over the abyss to a stump with a black brick block. On the stump is a Goomba with a Wario cap. After getting the cap, we break the block to reveal a Red Coin. When we return to the main part of the course, there is a grate spanning a gap over the poison. We can hang onto this grate, and there is a Red Coin underneath it that we can grab while crossing the gap. There is a Piranha Plant at the end, so be careful. I lost the Wario cap to it. Unfortunately, I fell in the poison gas too many times.
Take 2- I got the Red Coin under the grate and fell into the abyss trying to reach the one in the black brick block.
Take 3- I got 2 Red Coins and fell into the abyss.
Take 4- I got a 1-up from on top of the grate and got the Red Coin underneath it. I got the brick block Red Coin and jumped accidently into the abyss.
Take 5- I got the first two Red Coins, plus a couple of 1-ups. There is another Red Coin on the main level above a rising stump, near the entrance to where you battle Goomboss. I let a Goomba run into me to get rid of the Wario cap. Near the rising stump is the blue Star where you'll find the Star when it appears. Behind it is a series of rising stumps; the last of which is under a Red Coin. That stump doesn't move, but it has a Piranha Plant resting on it. Nearby is a tilting square platform with another Red Coin. Going back to the vine you climbed to reach Goomboss, at the top on the small branch is another Red Coin. Near the Switch Star area is a very tall stump. There is a Goomba wearing a Luigi cap there. We put on the cap and cross the abyss using tilting square platforms. There we will find a Power Flower. We quickly run back to the tree and backflip to a cage. We pass through the grate to find the next Red Coin. There is a Power Flower in the cage in case it runs out before you leave. After letting a Goomba hit us to get rid of the Luigi cap, we go back to the area with the Power Flower. Using it as Mario, we float up to the top of the same stump to find the last Red Coin. We jump down from the stump and get the Star.
Star Get #89, 42 Coins, 4 Lives
All we have to do is exit the level. If you're wondering what's on that far ledge, there is a 1-up on the far ledge of the tall stump with the cage.
The next Stars are the Red Coins and Secret Star in Big Boo Battle.

Dire, Dire Docks - Koopa Surfin' Switch Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
We should start the mission with Wario, to save time swimming through the tunnel and back. The Star Switch is under a black brick block on a sandbar in the first area. This is the main change from the N64 version. The middle block hides the Star Switch. The time limit is very short, so the only way to get the Star is by using the shell in the nearby item block. It took me two attempts to get it. The item block with the shell will respawn, so you don't have to exit the course.
Star Get #88, 7 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is the Red Coins in Goomboss Battle.

Shifting Sand Land - Tox Box Switch Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
Once again, we need Wario's brute strength. The Star Switch is under a black brick block in the Tox Box Maze and the Star Sphere is near the oasis. A Tox Box crushes us as we leave the maze. We got a Mario cap by the pavilion and go back into the maze. I stepped on the switch and long-jumped through the maze to victory.
Star Get #85, 3 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Pyramid Puzzle.

Big Boo's Haunt - Switch Star in the Basement

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
We'll need Wario's brawn for this level, as well. We go into the small house and take the elevator to the basement. We uncover the Star Switch under a black brick block in the room with the carousel. Conveniently, there is a Mario cap in the pool on the other side of the carousel, so we can move faster. This took me 10 attempts, including going through the carousel. What worked for me was lots of long-jumps.
Star Get #84, 18 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Tox Box Switch Star.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Switch Star of Cool, Cool Mountain

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
We need Wario for this mission. Yellow Wario caps will appear in most courses, so you don't have to switch out characters for some Stars.
We take the broken bridge warp to the base of the mountain. After running into a Goomba, we break the ice of the lake with the mother penguin. Underneath is the Star Sphere. Wario is the slowest of the four characters, so we get a Luigi cap so we can move faster. Speed is important for Switch Stars. We take the cable lift up to the floating island with the Bob-omb Buddy, stepped on the Star Switch, and tried to long-jump to the Star, but fell short, despite the gusts.
Take 2- I broke the ice, got the Luigi cap, rode the cable lift, stepped on the switch, long-jumped, landed headfirst in the snow, and ran out of time just as I was about to break the Star Sphere. I tried the same maneuver again and got the Star the second time.
Star Get #83, 4 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Switch Star in the Basement.

Chief Chilly Challenge - The Key to Wario

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
On the second floor, through the door with the high arch and the red carpet are the entrance to Snowman's Land and a wall of mirrors. We're not going there just yet, however. If we look to the right, there is another painting of Luigi that we can't enter. In the reflection, is a painting of Wario. Ordinarily, we can't get to the Wario painting, but if we bring Luigi into the room, we find some Power Flowers on the posts. Using them, Luigi can walk through the mirrors to the other side. We can now enter the Wario painting.
We find ourselves in a snowy course with the Cool, Cool Mountain music. We land on an icy platform and slide down the slide. The slide ends at a large gap to the abyss. Strong gusts of wind help propell us to the next icy platform with some Bullies. We run past the Bullies and hop across four tilting square platforms, passing another Bully, before taking a ride on a grate. We pass a Red Coin, because we can't get them all just yet.
The path splits, so we can go either left or right. The sign warns us about going left, saying "HIGH WIND WARNING! You'll be blown away unless you put on some weight!" We go to the right, ride a gust into some coins, and land in an icy lake. We must get out quickly to avoid taking damage. This water will not restore your health meter. We pass the group of Bullies and negotiate the moving, slippery platforms. Take your time here. Next are some moving steps and some snowmen, leading to the entrance to the battle arena, which is a large hole at the top of the moving steps. I died once thinking there was a Star on an island, but there wasn't one.
We meet Chief Chilly, a large icy Bully. He says "You there with a mustache! I am the king of cold, Chief Chilly. I lock up anyone who challenges the superiority of my 'stache. In fact, I locked up one such fellow just the other day. Hmm. What a sad, mangy mustache you've got there. It hardly seems worth it to destroy you. With a 'stache like that, you're clearly hte sidekick, not the star. But I'm between meetings now, so I might as well. In the battle for the best mustache, I'll win, hairs down. Ha ha ha! Bring it on, peach fuzz!"
Dealing with Chief Chilly is the same for the Big Bully: lure him to the edge, then push him off. It may work to do the jump kick to knock him into the water. The arena is a disc of ice over extremely icy water, which will do as much damage as lava if you fall in. We push him off once, and he hops around the arena in pain, knocking off a section of the arena's edge with each hop, making the arena smaller. We got in the second hit, and he takes out an even larger part of the arena. When he lands again, the arena will tilt. I fell in the water when I pushed him to the edge, but he hung on and recovered. He pushed me into the water. I slid into the water after pushing him, and died.
Take 2- I got in the first two hits without incident. When he landed and the platform tilted, I glitched through the platform and fell in the water, then he pushed me in twice. I died.
Take 3- I fell in while he did, fell in again because I didn't land on the platform, then landed on the section of the platform as it fell into the water.
Take 4- I got in the first two hits easily, fell in the water twice, and got it the last hit barely avoiding falling in. Chief Chilly says "No way! I lost to such a scrawny guy like that...? Hmmm, did I not groom my mustache well enough? I must hurry hoome and condition it... Farewell!" He disappears and a key with a "W" and a Wario hat appears in the center of the arena. Luigi poses with a "Ha ha!" and the key.
23 Coins, 4 Lives
Now we can get Wario! But before we do, as Luigi, we can use the Power Flower to get a Secret Star. We run through the mirror to the door in the reflection. We can go through the door to a white room. There is a Star there. We can't see the boundaries of the room, but Luigi will run into them.
Star Get #81, 4 Lives
Once we leave the white room, we can walk through the mirrors unaided. Time to free Wario! We unlock the door and Wario flips out with a "Waaaaah! Wario!" We get a message: "You've rescued Wario! Now he can smash up bad guys in style. Select Wario when you enter a course and set off on an adventure. You finally have all four heroes assembled! Now only Princess Toadstool remains!"
We need Wario to get the Stars we skipped. His punch sends enemies flying. When he uses the Power Flower, it becomes the Metal Cap. He can also break black brick blocks, which frequently hide Star Switches. We have all of the characters at our disposal so now we can get every Star!
The next Star is Through the Jet Stream (Jolly Roger Bay).

Friday, June 24, 2011

Dire, Dire Docks - Through the Jet Stream

N64
This mission is similar to "Through the Jet Stream" in Jolly Roger Bay. We swim through the channel to the other area. Near the seal, underwater is a grate with rings and a jet stream coming from it. After floating (or standing) through 5 rings, each with its own number, we hear a chime and the Star appears over the grate. The rings will continue to appear. Because of the jet stream, we need the Metal Cap to reach it. Run quickly, as the power does not last very long.
Star Get #70, 4 Coins, 4 Lives
We get a message: "You've found 70 Power Stars! The mystery of the endless stairs is solved, thanks to you -- and is Bowser ever upset! Now, onto the final bout!"
Well, we can now tackle the final Bowser with 70 Stars, but we can't reach him until we beat him a second time. We haven't even discover these mysterious stairs, and we've already taken care of the problem! This is what happens when you try to be thorough.
Nintendo DS
We need Wario for this mission. Wario is a slow swimmer, so watch your health meter if you start the course with him. We go through the tunnel and get the Power Flower. With the Metal Cap, we fall to the grate and stand through five rings and jump up to get the Star when it appears.
Star Get #87, 6 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Koopa Surfin' Switch Star.

Friday, April 8, 2011

Hazy Maze Cave - Underground Switch Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
We get Wario's Cap and go to the left. We got a 1-up and went into the underground cavern. We took a hit from a Goomba and exited the cave without finding anything. We went to the room with the Red Coins and found a Star Sphere. We took a hit from Mr. I and found a large black brick block. The sign in front of it says "The very hard-looking block in front of you really IS hard. Hitting it is not advised. But if you're shaped like a rock--and have rocks for brains--you'll probably do it anyway." As we are Wario, we have a lot of power, enough to send Goombas flying. We punch the block for a chime and the Star Switch is revealed. We missed the Star on the first try, so we lose the cap to a spider so we can move faster. We climb up the stair formation and long-jump from the arrow platform to the Star Sphere.
Star Get #56, 22 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Boil the Big Bully.

Hazy Maze Cave - Watch for Rolling Rocks

N64
We went to the left for the rolling rocks. I tried punching the rocks, but took damage twice. I went near the door to the elevator to the underground pool and wall-jumped up to the ledges near the door. The one closest to the hole has the Star.
Star Get #48, 5 Coins, 3 Lives

Nintendo DS
Before going to the area with the rolling rocks, we get Wario's Cap. This is much different from the N64 version, because the Star appears in one of the rolling rocks. We have to watch the Touch Screen to see when it appears. It's okay if you miss it; it will come back soon, about every 5th rock. We lost the cap when we tried to punch the rock and had to back track to get it. We took a hit from a spider and got the cap back from the Goomba. We lost it to another spider and were knocked into the void.
Take 2- We took a hit from a spider. We got Wario's Cap and used the Power Flower at the start to get Metal Wario. Unfortunately, the power didn't last long enough, so we have to get the Star without it. We took one hit from a rock and punched the rock with the Star from the side. We waited in the alcove with the Heart until it appeared. The Star flies over the small ramp where the rocks land, near the door. Rocks will keep rolling, even after you get the Star.
Star Get #55, 8 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Underground Switch Star.

Hazy Maze Cave - Metal-Head Wario Can Move

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
We went through the door on the left, tried to kill a spider, but were knocked into the void by a bat, then hit by a rock before dying.
Take 2- We take a hit from a spider, get a 1-up, and go down into the cavern with Dorrie. We backtrack out of the cavern, because Dorrie isn't wearing a yellow cap. We take two hits from the rocks and go back through the door we came through earlier. We take another hit from a spider and end up back at the start. There is a Goomba to the right with a yellow cap, so we take it after another hit from a spider. Things will be a little more difficult getting back because Wario has a horrible jump. We'll have to be extra precise when executing long-jumps with him. We go back into the cavern without incident.
We get the Power Flower near the elevator and run underwater, staying to the left. We trip the switch and the gates open. We go through the door. We walk up to the edge to make a spider appear and let it hit us to get rid of Wario's cap. We took two hits from spiders that appeared from the gap. I overshot the first long-jump and fell into the abyss.
Take 3- We got Wario's cap, get a 1-up, and enter the cavern without incident. We trip the switch and go through the door. We accidentally lose the cap to a spider and make the both long-jumps to the Star.
Star Get #52, 12 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is A-Maze-ing Emergency Exit.

Jolly Roger Bay - Through the Jet Stream

N64
Now that we've stepped on the Metal Cap Switch, we can now get the Star at the bottom of Jolly Roger Bay. We get the Metal Cap from the nearby green block, and Mario turns to metal before he puts the cap on his head. We run under the water, which kind of looks like walking on the moon. I took a hit from a clam and ran out of power before I could reach the Star. I surfaced and found a closer green block near the switch that forms a bridge to the ship. We get the Metal Cap and sink to the bottom. We stood on the grate and got the Star as the power ran out.
Star Get #43, 2 Coins, 8 Lives

Nintendo DS
Now that we have Wario, we can finally get this Star. We don't have to enter the painting as Wario, but we need to be Wario to access the Power Flower's Metal Cap property. We swim to the rock near the ship, and get the Power Flower near the switch that forms the bridge to the ship. We run into the water and let Wario sink to the floor. Over the bubbling grate, we get the Star before the power runs out.
Star Get #82, 0 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Switch Star of Cool, Cool Mountain.

Behind the Waterfall

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS, but was based off a mission in the N64.
We enter Hazy Maze Cave and go to the underground lake. We get a 1-up on the way. We climb onto Dorrie's back and steer toward the double doors that we can't reach. We get the yellow cap off of Dorrie's head and go through the double doors. We go into the inky pool and see some Snifits. The Hazy Maze Cave music still plays. Around the corner to the left is a Power Flower. We get it and transform into Metal Wario! We get a message: "The Power Flower turned Wario into a metal machine! When he's metal, he can walk underwater! Try it!"
While powered up, we get the four Red Coins that are underwater near the island near the waterfall. In the alcove near the second bridge, we find two more Red Coins and a Bob-omb Buddy who'll tell use where to find the rest. We have difficulty jumping to the island with the last two Red Coins, so we get the Power Flower so we won't be swept away by the current. Just before we can get the Power Flower, we lose the yellow cap from a Snifit and get the Power Flower as Mario. This works, as there is another Star here that only Mario can get. We make it to the island and get the last two Red Coins. The Star appears underwater.
Star Get #49, 35 Coins, 5 Lives
Getting the Red Coin Star takes us out of Hazy Maze Cave, so we go back in. We jump to avoid a spider and fall into the abyss.
Take 2- We take a hit from a bat and a rock and get a 1-up. We need to be Mario to get this Star, but there are caps in the area. We steer Dorrie back to the double doors. We take a hit from a Snifit and the current takes us away and dumps us outside the castle near the waterfall.
Take 3- We take a hit from a spider and get a 1-up. We jump off the elevator and take damage. We go back into the inky pool and take three hits from Snifits, losing the green cap we accidently picked up. We reach the island near the waterfall and get the Power Flower. As we float straight up, we see coins in an arrow formation pointing up. Above it is a Star.
Star Get #50, 22 Coins, 6 Lives
We get a message: "You've recovered 50 Power Stars! That's enough to open the Star Door on the third floor. Bowser's closer... Eek! But before you move on, make sure you found the ? Switch and hit the ? Blocks. Hurry along, now. The third floor is just ahead."
Wow, I actually did one of the things the message told me to do before it mentioned that I should have. I've already taken care of the ? Switch. I would have to open up much more of the castle to get 50 Power Stars without it. It already assumes I've beaten Bowser a second time. We're not quite there yet, but we'll keep going.
The next Star is Elevate for 8 Red Coin.
