Rainbow Ride - Switch Star of the Manor

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
You'll want to be Mario for this mission. As the title suggests, this Star is in the big house, so we go right at the hub and right when the carpet's path forks. After the carpet enters and exits the house once, get off on the balcony. There will be a long platform made of wood with a Star Switch at its end. The Star appears on the roof. Inside the house is a Power Flower that will make Mario into a balloon. I just missed it, so I dropped down to step on the switch again. I got it the second time, long-jumping to reach the house faster. Follow the ascending rainbow that makes up the carpet's path so you can line yourself up to go through the roof.
Star Get #145, 10 Coins, 3 Lives
We are now done with the last course in the game! All we have to do is get a few more secret Stars, and then, we'll tackle Bowser!

Rainbow Ride - The Big House in the Sky

N64
Wondering where the other carpet goes from the fork in the path? If you got to the right at the hub, where the path forks, the carpet on the right will take you in to the other side of the course. We go over glass boxes that the carpet can go through. Soon, we approach a large house and go in the side window. We briefly get off the carpet to dodge the flames periodically spewing from the fireplace. There is a table in the house, but not much else. We leave the house through another window and go over more glass boxes. The carpet takes us back into the house and heads for the roof, forcing us to dodge the flames again. Be sure to stay on the carpet until the carpet reaches the roof; there's no easy way to get back on and the carpet will drop at the end of its path. The Star is on the roof, as well as an item block with a 1-up.
Star Get #114, 15 Coins, 5 Lives

Nintendo DS
You'll want to do this mission as Mario. The big house is in the same location. Take a right at the hub and the carpet on the right where the path forks. After we climb over some glass boxes, we go in a window of the big house. We dodge the fireplace flames and go out another window, go over more glass boxes, and return into the house through a third window. The flames made us fall off the carpet, but there's a Power Flower in the house, so Mario can float to the roof. We got the 1-up in the item block and got the Star on the roof.
Star Get #139, 19 Coins, 5 Lives

Rainbow Ride - Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow

Rainbow Ride is the 15th and final course in the game. It is very spread out and floats over the void. It is accessed via the hole in the window to the left of Tick Tock Clock.

N64
Rainbow Ride is a difficult course due to the number of ways you can fall off platforms. It's also not obvious where everything is and where you need to go. The slide music plays. We land on a yellow platform and walk to the carpet ahead. It is a flying carpet that will follow the rainbow path in front of it. When the rainbow ends, the carpet falls into the void, so get off of it before then. This carpet circles around a large spinning circular rock with an Amp. There is also a fire-spewing rock that may force you to jump off the carpet to the rock, unless you time it well. But get back on the carpet immediately: if you're not on it for a while, it will flicker, then disappear and you may be stuck where you are. It will regenerate where you first found it. You can jump on it while it is flickering to make it solid again. The first carpet will take you to fours more circular spinning rocks. Jump off the carpet, as there is a gap between where the carpet stops and the next platform begins. Here you'll find Lakitu throwing Spinies your way. You can try to take him out (for 10 coins), but you won't be hanging around here for very long. These four spinning stones can be thought of as the hub of Rainbow Ride. There are Stars to get to the left, to the right, and straight ahead from here. For this Star, we need to go right. This will take you to another carpet, which will have you climbing on rectangular prism platforms to avoid being knocked off (but you don't have to take action for all of them). The path for the carpet will curve, so it may be good to adjust the camera. Up next is a platform with a brick block. You have a limited amount of time, so either go around (or over) it or break it. The carpet will come to the end of the path, where you'll find two more carpets, which will go in opposite directions. We need the carpet on the left. Around this point, you'll hear a sound that is the oars of the Cruiser rowing. Take a quick look at it; you'll soon have more obstacles to dodge. The path will begin to spiral around a stone that resembles a top. Blue fire will come out of its base, which usually isn't a problem. As the carpet climbs, you'll see the platform has two arms that will try to knock you off when you get high enough. The carpet ride ends at some dropaway platforms. Quickly backflip up to the next level, where you'll find a plank to the Cruiser, a large ship with rowing feather oars. On the ship, a strong wind is blowing to the stern. At the bow is the Star. Walk against the wind to get it. (Or have a Bob-omb push you partway).
Star Get #113, 9 Coins, 12 Lives

Nintendo DS
Not much has changed from the N64 version for this mission, except for some updated sprites. We take the first flying carpet to the hub, dodging fire. We go to the right and take another carpet, this time with more platforms to catch us. The path forks ahead and we take the carpet to the left. The platform that looks like a top no longer spews fire, but will still try to knock you off the carpet. The sound of the Cruiser's oars rowing is much clearer. As the carpet spirals, you get a great view of the course. I fell off the dropaway platform.
Take 2- I made it past the dropaway platforms and boarded the Cruiser using the plank. The gusts are too strong here for us to reach the Star at the bow. Conveniently, there is a Wario Cap and a Power Flower aboard. At the top of the mast, above the crow's nest, we can get a 1-up. We use the Metal Cap to get a 1-up at the bow, as well as the Star.
Star Get #138, 15 Coins, 8 Lives'

I later returned to get 100 Coins. There are several Blue Coins from the Blue Coin Switch in the maze with Red Coins. I got the Red Coins and coins from the swings and triangles. I got the last coins on the carpet rides to the big house.
Star Get #119, 102 Coins, 4 Lives

Tick Tock Clock - Luigi in the Cage

This mission is a renamed mission on the Nintendo DS similar to Roll into the Cage.
The layout of the Nintendo DS's Tick Tock Clock is similar, but more forgiving. The gap where you can fall into the void is much smaller, but I managed to fall in with an unintentional wall-jump.
Take 2- I went into the course with time stopped. It's okay if you don't go in as Luigi, because you'll find Luigi's cap near the Power Flower you need. The cage is in the same place, but we have to go past it to reach the Power Flower. Past the cage is a platform leading to a pole and an Amp. Climb the pole up and jump up the two yellow platforms, then backflip up to another. You'll see more grating, as well as the Power Flower, and maybe a Goomba with Luigi's cap. I got the cap as well as the Power Flower to vanish and fall through the floor into the cage with the Star.
Star Get #128, 11 Coins, 3 Lives

Tiny-Huge Island - Switch Star on the Island

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
This is more like Switch Star in the Cave, because that's where you'll find it. It's easiest to do this mission with Mario. After four attempts to reach the cave, we made it in. I backflipped to the rock with the Blue Coin Switch, which had the Star Switch as well. The Star appears on the other tall pillar. I used the Power Flower, getting a 1-up, as well the Star, with Balloon Mario.
Star Get #127, 13 Coins, 3 Lives

Tiny-Huge Island - Wiggler's Red Coins

N64
The Red Coins are hidden in the cave accessble via a narrow bridge. You can either enter the small painting, use the warp pipe, and slide down to the grassy area where the bridge is, or enter the large painting and use the cannon to grab a tree near the bridge. Inside are several rocks projecting from the void. The Red Coins are on top of some of them. The Hazy Maze Cave music plays. You may notice a strange sound in the cave. Looking up to the ceiling reveals a small hole (which you haven't opened yet) and a large Wiggler wandering around on top of a grate. You can't reach him from here, so ignore him for the time being and focus on the Red Coins. You start off on a narrow ledge, which widens near the first Red Coin. You'll need to engage in some rock-hopping, as the next five Red Coins are on adjacent platforms, some on lower platforms than the one you're standing on, so look around. The seventh is on the platform with the Blue Coin Switch. The last one is on top of one of the two taller rock pillar. We must wall-jump to reach it. The Star appears at the base of the two pillars. This took me 6 tries.
Star Get #102, 36 Coins, 10 Lives

Nintendo DS
I decided to enter the big painting. I slid off.
Take 2- I amde it into the cave. There are fewer platforms in this version, making things a little simpler and more linear. To make things a little easier, I used the Power Flower on the rock with the Blue Coin Switch to float to the last Red Coin on the tall pillar. I got a 1-up on the way. The Star appears in between the pillars.
Star Get #125, 41 Coins, 4 Lives

Wet-Dry World - Quick Race Through Downtown!

hg\gvfbN64
I backflipped into the painting to make the water level extra high. This way I could swim to the grate, climb on the grate and dive into the channel. I swam into town and drained the water. On the right side of the steeple is a Vanish Cap. We put it on and run through the wall that's the same color as the wall in front of the steeple where the Red Coins are to the other side of the steeple, where there is a large cage. We run into the cage and let the power run out. I then wall jumped part-way up the white stone, then climbed up to the Star.
Star Get #89, 2 Coins, 4 Lives

Nintendo DS
As I did not backflip into the painting, I raised the water to the highest level, then used the cannon to reach the grate. I got a 1-up and drained the water level. We need the Vanish Cap power, so we need Luigi. Thankfully, there is a Luigi Cap in the town. I grabbed the cap and ran to the right side of the steeple. There is a Power Flower there. We use it to run through the wall in front of the steeple into the cage. We backflip up the white stone and climb to the Star.
Star Get #110, 0 Coins, 8 Lives
The next Star is Soaked Silver Stars.

Snowman's Land - Into the Igloo

N64
I decided to get 100 Coins in this mission. I got many coins from Spindrifts and Moneybags, creatures that have lots of coins and disguise themselves as coins. Runnning around small snowmen, as you would Mr. I, will defeat them and get you some coins. We get the Shiny Shell and go up the slope on the snowman marked with coins. At the top of the slope is a tiny igloo. Crouch, then move to crawl, so you can crawl into the igloo. The Hazy Maze Cave music plays. The igloo is very spacious inside. It's a maze of ice walls, some of which contain coins. I found the Bob-omb Buddy so he could open the cannon. You can see a Vanish Cap block that you can't just seem to reach. Near the front of the igloo, you can slide between an ice wall and the igloo wall. I then backflipped over an ice wall to reach the Vanish Cap. With it, we can walk through ice walls. I got several coins from the walls, totaling 101.
Star Get #81, 101 Coins, 6 Lives
The Star is in the front ice wall. While the Vanish Cap is still in effect, run to the front wall and jump into the ice to get the Star.
Star Get #82, 105 Coins, 8 Lives

Nintendo DS
We need to be Luigi for this mission. I decided to get 100 Coins in this mission as well. I got over 40 coins before dying in the water after losing the Shiny Shell.
Take 2- I successfully made it up to the igloo with 50 Coins. We crawl into the igloo, moving while crouching. The Hazy Maze Cave music plays, but the layout is much different from the N64 version. There are pools of cold water that can drain your health. We talk to the Bob-omb Buddy so he'll open the cannon. There are several coins underwater. The Red Coins are also in the igloo. There are many Spindrifts that will provide you with coins. The Star appeared in the water and fully restored my health.
Star Get #101, 100 Coins, 3 Lives
As Luigi, get the Power Flower in the back left corner. Run quickly to the front of the igloo, where the floor is a grate. Drop through the grate to get the Star.
Star Get #102, 103 Coins, 6 Lives
The next Star is Red Coins in the House.

Snowman's Land - Yoshi's Ice Sculpture

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
As the title suggests, we need Yoshi for this mission. Near where you start is a Power Flower Block with a sign, which says "The Power Flower strengthens characters baed on their personality types. Eating nast enemies has given Yoshi a bad case of heartburn! When he plucks a Power Flower, he'll be able to breathe fire!" We will now unleash Yoshi's Power Flower Power! (And our inner pyro.) When we get the Power Flower, a remix of the Metal Cap music plays and we get a message: "Yoshi has a bad case of heartburn from gobbling enemies. With the Power Flower, he can breathe fire! Try it out in Standard Mode by pressing (A)! I've heard barbecued Goomba is a delicacy." Where the ice maze was in the N64 version is 4 stacks of large ice cubes, one of which contains a Star. With the Power Flower, climb up the stacks with one and two ice cubes, and use the fire to melt the top ice cube in the stack of three that doesn't have the Star. Stand on the new stack of two and melt the ice cube with the Star. The Star will not fly away. Yoshi can grab it with his tongue.
Star Get #98, 0 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Whirl from the Freezing Pond.

Chief Chilly Challenge - Red Coins and Secret Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
The first Red Coin is over the abyss that the grate crosses. Before we get it, we get the Wario cap. Once across the abyss, we get the Metal Cap from the Power Flower. We cross the narrow strip of ice through the gusting winds. There is a black brick block on the other side. This time, it contains a Star.
Star Get #91, 11 Coins, 7 Coins
After getting the secret Star, we get the Metal Cap to go back. The second Red Coin is in the center of a square formation of coins. The gust will pick you up into the coins. I stood slightly off center to get the Red Coin. If you miss, jump back into the abyss to let the gust pick you up and put you on the ledge again. The ledge is much higher than the pond you land in. The third Red Coin is over the pond, closer to the abyss. A Bully knocked me into the abyss.
Take 2- I got the first three Red Coins as Luigi. The fourth is in the middle of the platform with the Bullies. The fifth and sixth ones are over the second and fourth moving ice blocks, respectively. If we climb partway up the mountain, we will find a Power Flower. As Luigi, we can use it to get the Red Coin in the cage at the base of the mountain, near the moving ice blocks. I carefully jumped down the mountain and got it. Around the corner is Mario's cap. With the Power Flower, we can float to the large piece of ice where the last Red Coin is. There is another Power Flower for the return flight. The Star appears near where you got Mario's cap.
Star Get #92, 31 Coins, 6 Lives
Exit the course when you're done.
The next Stars are the Red Coins and Switch Star of The Secret Under the Moat.

Big Boo Battle - Red Coins and Secret Star

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
I started this mission as Mario, entering Big Boo's Haunt on a later mission. (Any mission but the first one will work.)
The first Red Coin is across from the entrance in the carousel. The next two are in the second room. It will take some time to get all of the Red Coins, as some of them will send you on the incorrect path. The next two are in the third room. As Mario, use the Power Flower to get the one floating high in the corner. Two more are in the fourth room. Pick up the Wario cap here. In the fifth room, the entrance to the battle, there is a black brick block with the 8th Red Coin. The Star will appear in the same room, nearby.
Star Get #90, 35 Coins, 6 Lives
I returned later to get the Secret Star. In the room with the entrance to the battle, you'll see a Star on the Touch Screen Map. Despite searching for it, it doesn't seem possible to reach. In the room with the Power Flower, there is a Luigi cap (if you're not Luigi). As Luigi, with the Vanish Cap, run through the rooms, long-jumping to the doors you need to go through. The Vanish Cap does not last long. Run across the fallaway bridge, or long-jump if need be, then jump into the Boo painting. There is a hidden room behind the painting wiht a secret Star.
Star Get #93, 0 Coins, 5 Lives
Just exit the course afterward.
The next Stars are the Red Coins and Secret Star in Chief Chilly Challenge.

Goomboss Battle - Red Coins

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
Now that we have Wario, we can gather all of the Red Coins in this course. I started the course as Mario. After moving past the rising stumps, taking poison damage on the way, we come across a platform moving over the abyss to a stump with a black brick block. On the stump is a Goomba with a Wario cap. After getting the cap, we break the block to reveal a Red Coin. When we return to the main part of the course, there is a grate spanning a gap over the poison. We can hang onto this grate, and there is a Red Coin underneath it that we can grab while crossing the gap. There is a Piranha Plant at the end, so be careful. I lost the Wario cap to it. Unfortunately, I fell in the poison gas too many times.
Take 2- I got the Red Coin under the grate and fell into the abyss trying to reach the one in the black brick block.
Take 3- I got 2 Red Coins and fell into the abyss.
Take 4- I got a 1-up from on top of the grate and got the Red Coin underneath it. I got the brick block Red Coin and jumped accidently into the abyss.
Take 5- I got the first two Red Coins, plus a couple of 1-ups. There is another Red Coin on the main level above a rising stump, near the entrance to where you battle Goomboss. I let a Goomba run into me to get rid of the Wario cap. Near the rising stump is the blue Star where you'll find the Star when it appears. Behind it is a series of rising stumps; the last of which is under a Red Coin. That stump doesn't move, but it has a Piranha Plant resting on it. Nearby is a tilting square platform with another Red Coin. Going back to the vine you climbed to reach Goomboss, at the top on the small branch is another Red Coin. Near the Switch Star area is a very tall stump. There is a Goomba wearing a Luigi cap there. We put on the cap and cross the abyss using tilting square platforms. There we will find a Power Flower. We quickly run back to the tree and backflip to a cage. We pass through the grate to find the next Red Coin. There is a Power Flower in the cage in case it runs out before you leave. After letting a Goomba hit us to get rid of the Luigi cap, we go back to the area with the Power Flower. Using it as Mario, we float up to the top of the same stump to find the last Red Coin. We jump down from the stump and get the Star.
Star Get #89, 42 Coins, 4 Lives
All we have to do is exit the level. If you're wondering what's on that far ledge, there is a 1-up on the far ledge of the tall stump with the cage.
The next Stars are the Red Coins and Secret Star in Big Boo Battle.

Chief Chilly Challenge - The Key to Wario

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
On the second floor, through the door with the high arch and the red carpet are the entrance to Snowman's Land and a wall of mirrors. We're not going there just yet, however. If we look to the right, there is another painting of Luigi that we can't enter. In the reflection, is a painting of Wario. Ordinarily, we can't get to the Wario painting, but if we bring Luigi into the room, we find some Power Flowers on the posts. Using them, Luigi can walk through the mirrors to the other side. We can now enter the Wario painting.
We find ourselves in a snowy course with the Cool, Cool Mountain music. We land on an icy platform and slide down the slide. The slide ends at a large gap to the abyss. Strong gusts of wind help propell us to the next icy platform with some Bullies. We run past the Bullies and hop across four tilting square platforms, passing another Bully, before taking a ride on a grate. We pass a Red Coin, because we can't get them all just yet.
The path splits, so we can go either left or right. The sign warns us about going left, saying "HIGH WIND WARNING! You'll be blown away unless you put on some weight!" We go to the right, ride a gust into some coins, and land in an icy lake. We must get out quickly to avoid taking damage. This water will not restore your health meter. We pass the group of Bullies and negotiate the moving, slippery platforms. Take your time here. Next are some moving steps and some snowmen, leading to the entrance to the battle arena, which is a large hole at the top of the moving steps. I died once thinking there was a Star on an island, but there wasn't one.
We meet Chief Chilly, a large icy Bully. He says "You there with a mustache! I am the king of cold, Chief Chilly. I lock up anyone who challenges the superiority of my 'stache. In fact, I locked up one such fellow just the other day. Hmm. What a sad, mangy mustache you've got there. It hardly seems worth it to destroy you. With a 'stache like that, you're clearly hte sidekick, not the star. But I'm between meetings now, so I might as well. In the battle for the best mustache, I'll win, hairs down. Ha ha ha! Bring it on, peach fuzz!"
Dealing with Chief Chilly is the same for the Big Bully: lure him to the edge, then push him off. It may work to do the jump kick to knock him into the water. The arena is a disc of ice over extremely icy water, which will do as much damage as lava if you fall in. We push him off once, and he hops around the arena in pain, knocking off a section of the arena's edge with each hop, making the arena smaller. We got in the second hit, and he takes out an even larger part of the arena. When he lands again, the arena will tilt. I fell in the water when I pushed him to the edge, but he hung on and recovered. He pushed me into the water. I slid into the water after pushing him, and died.
Take 2- I got in the first two hits without incident. When he landed and the platform tilted, I glitched through the platform and fell in the water, then he pushed me in twice. I died.
Take 3- I fell in while he did, fell in again because I didn't land on the platform, then landed on the section of the platform as it fell into the water.
Take 4- I got in the first two hits easily, fell in the water twice, and got it the last hit barely avoiding falling in. Chief Chilly says "No way! I lost to such a scrawny guy like that...? Hmmm, did I not groom my mustache well enough? I must hurry hoome and condition it... Farewell!" He disappears and a key with a "W" and a Wario hat appears in the center of the arena. Luigi poses with a "Ha ha!" and the key.
23 Coins, 4 Lives
Now we can get Wario! But before we do, as Luigi, we can use the Power Flower to get a Secret Star. We run through the mirror to the door in the reflection. We can go through the door to a white room. There is a Star there. We can't see the boundaries of the room, but Luigi will run into them.
Star Get #81, 4 Lives
Once we leave the white room, we can walk through the mirrors unaided. Time to free Wario! We unlock the door and Wario flips out with a "Waaaaah! Wario!" We get a message: "You've rescued Wario! Now he can smash up bad guys in style. Select Wario when you enter a course and set off on an adventure. You finally have all four heroes assembled! Now only Princess Toadstool remains!"
We need Wario to get the Stars we skipped. His punch sends enemies flying. When he uses the Power Flower, it becomes the Metal Cap. He can also break black brick blocks, which frequently hide Star Switches. We have all of the characters at our disposal so now we can get every Star!
The next Star is Through the Jet Stream (Jolly Roger Bay).

Dire, Dire Docks - Through the Jet Stream

N64
This mission is similar to "Through the Jet Stream" in Jolly Roger Bay. We swim through the channel to the other area. Near the seal, underwater is a grate with rings and a jet stream coming from it. After floating (or standing) through 5 rings, each with its own number, we hear a chime and the Star appears over the grate. The rings will continue to appear. Because of the jet stream, we need the Metal Cap to reach it. Run quickly, as the power does not last very long.
Star Get #70, 4 Coins, 4 Lives
We get a message: "You've found 70 Power Stars! The mystery of the endless stairs is solved, thanks to you -- and is Bowser ever upset! Now, onto the final bout!"
Well, we can now tackle the final Bowser with 70 Stars, but we can't reach him until we beat him a second time. We haven't even discover these mysterious stairs, and we've already taken care of the problem! This is what happens when you try to be thorough.
Nintendo DS
We need Wario for this mission. Wario is a slow swimmer, so watch your health meter if you start the course with him. We go through the tunnel and get the Power Flower. With the Metal Cap, we fall to the grate and stand through five rings and jump up to get the Star when it appears.
Star Get #87, 6 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Koopa Surfin' Switch Star.

Sunday, June 19, 2011

Dire, Dire Docks - Inside the Cage

This is a renamed mission unique to the Nintendo DS. The N64 mission title is Collecting the Caps...
We need Luigi for this mission. With Luigi, we swim through the channel to the other area. The sub is still there because we haven't beaten him yet. The Power Flower is on the same wall with the switch, closer to the seal. We get the Power Flower to vanish and swim down to the cage to the left of the seal.
Star Get #75, 4 Coins, 4 Lives
We're halfway done! Only 75 more stars to go! (The DS version has 150 Stars, while the N64 version has 120.)
The next Star is the Manta Ray's Reward.

Shifting Sand Land - Stand Tall on the Four Pillars

N64
For this mission, we have to stand on top of each of the four pillars surrounding the pyramid. On my first try, I landed on two, but fell in the quicksand.
Take 2- To reach all of the pillars, we need the Wing Cap. Three of them can be reached by walking, but the fourth is in the instant-death quicksand in the Tox Box maze. We only need to stand on each pillar briefly before going to the next one. After we've stood on all four, the top of the pyramid spins off and explodes. We hear the chime. We walked up the path around the pyramid to the top, but you can use the Wing Cap to fly there. There is a hole in the top, so we go in.
We land in a cage that lowers to a red brick area in the center of the pyramid. We could see this cage when we got the Star from Inside the Ancient Pyramid. Do not jump out of the cage because there is no way to access the brick without it. Inside the red brick is a hole. If we walk slowly and stare down the hole, we can see the area within. It looks like a temple surrounded by an abyss. We go down to the temple area and step on the stairs. They shake and move, revealing that they are the stone hands called Eyerock. They say "Who... walk... here? Who... break... seal? Wake... ancient... ones? We no like light... Rrrrummbbble... We no like... intruders! Now battle... ...hand... ...to... ...hand!" Eyerock moves and the battle music starts. In the lower part of the palm is an eye, which is its weak point. We have to punch the eye when it is open. Which eye is open will alternate. After a while, the hands will try to pound you or slide you off the altar. They knocked me off, after getting in several hits.
Take 3- We land back in the descending cage. We awaken Eyerock again and hit each eye three times. Eyerock says "Grrrrumbbble! What... happen? We... crushed like pebble. You so strong! You rule ancient pyramid! For today... Now, take Star of Power. We.. sleep... darkness."
The Star appears on the stone. The Hazy Maze Cave music plays.
Star Get #64, 0 Coins, 5 Lives

Nintendo DS
We land in Shifting Sand Land and triple-jump onto the stone pavilion to get the Power Flower with the Wing Cap. We landed on all four pillars with ease and watched the top spin off. By that time, the Wing Cap ran out. Unfortunately, the cyclone picked us up and dropped us off on the side of the pyramid, so we slid into the instant-death quicksand.
Take 2- We stood on all four pillars and had enough power in the Wing Cap to fly to the top of the pyramid. We fell into the hole and onto the descending cage. There was a brick in the red brick that we broke for a chime. We can still see the altar below. We step on the stairs, which reveal themselves to be Eyerock. They give the same speech as in the N64 (with fewer ellipses). They still alternate with eye is open. We took out the right hand first, then the left before it could push us off the altar. Eyerock gives the same speech after both hands explode. The Star appears on the stone. The Hazy Maze Cave music plays.
Star Get #71, 4 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Free Flying for 8 Red Coins.

Big Boo's Haunt - Eye to Eye in the Secret Room

N64
Now that we have the Vanish Cap, we can tackle the last mission in Big Boo's Haunt. We go up to the second floor and get the Vanish Cap on the balcony near the entrance to the mansion. We wall-jump up to the third floor and go through the door, and the Boo painting around the corner while we're still powered up. Inside is a large Mr. I. We run around the Mr. I once we're visible and it spins down into a Star.
Star Get #59, 0 Coins, 23 Lives

Nintendo DS
We don't need to go under the moat to get this Star. (We can't unlock it for a while, anyway). All we need is the man in green, Luigi! We go up to the second floor, through the second door on the right. We get the Power Flower and backflip to the third floor. Just around the corner is the Boo painting, which we go through to find a large Mr. I and a Boo. After the power runs out, we run around Mr. I once and it spins down into a Star.

Hazy Maze Cave - Watch for Rolling Rocks

N64
We went to the left for the rolling rocks. I tried punching the rocks, but took damage twice. I went near the door to the elevator to the underground pool and wall-jumped up to the ledges near the door. The one closest to the hole has the Star.
Star Get #48, 5 Coins, 3 Lives

Nintendo DS
Before going to the area with the rolling rocks, we get Wario's Cap. This is much different from the N64 version, because the Star appears in one of the rolling rocks. We have to watch the Touch Screen to see when it appears. It's okay if you miss it; it will come back soon, about every 5th rock. We lost the cap when we tried to punch the rock and had to back track to get it. We took a hit from a spider and got the cap back from the Goomba. We lost it to another spider and were knocked into the void.
Take 2- We took a hit from a spider. We got Wario's Cap and used the Power Flower at the start to get Metal Wario. Unfortunately, the power didn't last long enough, so we have to get the Star without it. We took one hit from a rock and punched the rock with the Star from the side. We waited in the alcove with the Heart until it appeared. The Star flies over the small ramp where the rocks land, near the door. Rocks will keep rolling, even after you get the Star.
Star Get #55, 8 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Underground Switch Star.

Hazy Maze Cave - Navigating the Toxic Maze

N64
If you go into the cave with the haze, there is an alcove near the one used for A-Maze-ing Emergency Exit. When we go through it, we have to deal with flames and bats. The elevator takes us to the Star on the other side of the grate to the entrance to the underground pool with Dorrie. I used the Metal Cap to get through the maze.
Star Get #47, 16 Coins, 3 Lives
Later, I got 100 Coins in this mission. Lots of them came from the Blue Coin switch in the cave with the haze. I also got all the Red Coins, some coins from the cavern, and coins from the spiders.
Star Get #49, 100 Coins, 2 Lives

Nintendo DS
Once again, we go into the cave with the haze. After taking damage from the haze, we get the Power Flower to float to the alcove past the first one. We go through the door, pass some bats, and the elevator comes down to meet us. We take it up to the other side of the grate with the Star.
Star Get #54, 10 Coins, 4 Lives
I returned to get 100 Coins. I got coins from spiders, 6 Red Coins, in the area with the rolling rocks, and near the 1-up box. I got a 1-up and Wario's cap, so I could get the Blue Coins in the cave with the haze. I died in the cave.
Take 2- I picked up coins in the underground cavern to add to my total. I got Wario's Cap and got all 8 Red Coins. I got most of the Blue Coins, but fell into the hole after taking the "emergency exit".
Take 3- I was knocked into the void by a Goomba.
Take 4- I did everything in Take 2, but got only 5 Red Coins. The Star appeared over the grate. I went to the "emergency exit" Star, backflipped onto the grate and got the Star.
Star Get #57, 101 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Watch for Rolling Rocks.

Hazy Maze Cave - A-Maze-ing Emergency Exit

N64
I went out of order with this one, because there are two Stars accessible in the Hazy Maze Cave, and I wasn't sure which was which. This one is a little more difficult to get. We took a hit from a spider and went through the door on the right. We slide down the pole where the Red Coins are and go through a door on the right. There is a hole in the floor, so we drop down. There is a greenish-yellow haze that causes us to slowly lose health. We go forward then turn right at the wall. There is a Blue Coin Switch out of the haze. Pounding it produces a trail of Blue Coins in the haze that leads to an alcove with a door. We go through the door and make our way to an elevator. The elevator takes us to a door which leads us into the area with the rolling rocks. We are higher up and can reach the grating. We can take the rightmost path to the Star on a floating island. A nearby sign says "If you jump and hold the A button, you can hang onto some objects overhead. It's the same as grabbing a flying bird!"
If we let go, or go off the grate, we'll fall into the hole to the abyss. I did this nine times.
In Take 2, I checked the signs near the hole to the cave. "Hidden inside the green block is the amazing Metal Cap. Wearing it, you won't catch fire or be hurt by enemy attacks. You don't even have to breathe while wearing it. The only problem: You can't swim in it." Sounds like a nifty item. The other one says "Danger Ahead! Beware of the strange cloud! Don't inhale! If you feel faint, run for higher ground and fresh air!" It then gives you the key to following the map nearby.
Starting in Take 2, I got the Metal Cap in the cave. It makes the maze much easier to navigate, but will run out about when you reach the alcoves, if you get the Blue Coins.
After slowly navigating the grating, we landed on the floating island with the Star.
Star Get #46, 50 Coins, 3 Lives

Nintendo DS
We go the entrance to the cave with the haze. The route hasn't changed. The signs say "The Power Flower gives strength according to the personality of the person who plucked it. Iron man Wario will turn into a metal man! He won't be burned or hurt by enemy attacks. He doesn't even have to breathe while wearing it. The only problem: he can't swim in it." and "Danger Ahead! Beware of the strange toxic cloud! Don't breathe it! If you feel faint, run for higher ground and fresh air!"
We can just as easily complete this mission as Mario. We go down the hole. We land in the purple haze and take damage. We get the Power Flower and float to the nearest alcove. We go through the door, reach the elevator, and go through another door into the rolling rock area. The sign says "In Standard Mode, jump and hold (B) to hang on to some objects overhead. Use this move to hitch a ride with a flying bird."
We take the path to the right and slowly make it to the floating island with the Star. The grating is narrow, like in the N64, so take it slow and don't leave it.
Star Get #53, 10 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Navigating the Toxic Maze.
