New Super Mario Bros. Wii: 1-3 Toad Rescue --Part 2- Still Not Getting It

I found Toad in this world in a block. After releasing him, he kept running around like a madman- he and Yoshi are probably cut from the same cloth. He was in a block near a Hammer Bro and died from his hammers. I still can't pick up Toad. (At this point in the game, I still did not realize I needed to hold the 1 button to carry stuff. Maybe, in later levels, I can pick him up like a Koopa shell. That would make life easier, but things are seldom easy in videogames.
