Final Thoughts on Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been completed! This was a great game and I really enjoyed it, even through the most frustrating challenges. The game was well designed overall.

Here's what I liked:

  • The music- More excellent music performed by the Super Mario Galaxy Orchestra. Personal favorites include Beat Block, Slipsand, Fleet Glide, Starshine Beach, and Freezy Flake

  • Different beginning and ending than Galaxy- I was hoping that the beginning and ending would not be too similar to Galaxy, which was the case

  • Same number of missions- This made sure that the game took about the same amount of time

  • Green Star Challenge- Unexpected, but better challenge than replaying the game over again with Luigi again

  • Interactive credits- I like credits I can interact with better than ones I just have to sit through

  • Same controls- This made it very easy to pick up, because I already know how to play from playing Galaxy

  • Super Guide/ Cosmic Rosalina- Although I didn't use this feature, it was nice to know that I wouldn't have to give up the game if I couldn't get through a mission

  • Yoshi's many appearances

  • Completely original galaxies- Beat Block, Flip-Swap, and Boulder Bowl

Pros, Cons, and Improvements over Galaxy:

Pros

  • New galaxies

  • New music

  • New powerups

  • Improved Co-Star Mode- Co-Stars can do more and feel more involved with their own character

  • Improved Prankster Comet dynamics- Time stops ticking down after you complete the mission

  • You can play as Luigi earlier in the game
  • Improved boss dynamics- in Galaxy, to beat all but a few bosses, shaking the Wiimote is key. Bosses from King Kaliente to Bowser can be defeated by shaking the Wiimote. In Galaxy 2, there is more variety in the ways to defeat bosses, adding to the challenge

Cons

  • Same swimming controls- the swimming controls in the 3D Mario games are not very intuitive and are very frustrating, causing players to swim in circles and get lost
  • Same long jump/backflip/ground pound controls- these three moves all involve pressing the (Z) and (A) buttons. If they are not pressed in the correct order, the wrong move will execute, which could cause Mario or Luigi to die, like if they accidently ground pound through a cloud instead of long-jumping

  • The Ice Flower and Red Star are not available

  • Some planets/ galaxies were taken directly from other games with minimum alteration- Stone Cyclone, Twisty Trials, and Throwback
  • Cosmic Clones- About equally annoying as Cosmic Mario / Cosmic Luigi, but more difficult to handle due to the many copies and the potential for damage. It's like watching yourself on tape delay multiple times, versus racing a ghost
  • Too many remixes of the trailer theme- I like the song a lot, but it was remixed several times, which became annoying after a while. This is possibly because I watched the trailers/ transmissions a lot and just heard it too much
  • Too many remixes of other Mario music- I was hoping for more original music, but there were many remixes, and some music was lifted completely from Galaxy

Was Super Mario Galaxy 2 harder than Super Mario Galaxy?

Game designers said they wanted Super Mario Galaxy 2 to be harder than its prequel. From playing both games, and taking the final two galaxies out of consideration, I found the games to be approximately equally difficult. I did not keep track of how many tries I used in Galaxy, but I remember having particular difficulty with 5 or 6 Stars, which took several tries, possibly into the hundreds. In this respect, I believe that they are equal. But some things made Galaxy 2 easier: the trailers and transmissions. Although they include depictions 0f new and previous features of gameplay. they also provide weak points and strategies to defeat many of the bosses, including Gobblegut, Digga-Leg, and Megahammer. What made the game somewhat harder are the galaxies that regulate your actions and use of the controls, such as Beat Block, and Flip-Swap. Flip-Swap, in particular, controls your ability to spin to save yourself. An ill-timed shake will send you to your doom.

Considering the games in their entirety, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is harder than Super Mario Galaxy. From my experience, this is solely due to the final galaxies. Grand Finale Galaxy is nothing like Grandmaster Galaxy. In Grand Finale, the game designers seem to say "Thanks for playing the game all the way through. As a reward, we're giving you a simple Purple Coin mission as a cool-down and wrap-up to the game." The mission is incredibly simple- they only hide one coin from you (which isn't difficult to find) and everything else is laid out clearly. There are no enemies and you couldn't die if you tried. In Grandmaster, the designers seem to say, "We want you to die. We want you to die a lot." They seem to be channeling The Chimp, in that they want to enjoy your frustrationg more.

Overall, this was an enjoyable game and I highly recommend it. What game will I play next? Just wait and see!

Grandmaster Galaxy - The Perfect Run

The master computer is monitoring all elements of the launch. Roll that beautiful footage! Luma multiplayer go! - Transmission 5
Welcome Back to the Galaxy!

This is it! The last Star! It is also my worst performance. It's a Daredevil Run of The Ultimate Test. Personally, I would have preferred a Green Star, Purple Coin, or Cosmic Clone mission over a Daredevil mission. There are a few changes from The Ultimate Test:

  • Goombas in the first planet are now green birds, so you can't touch them.
  • No midgates.
  • There is one 1-up where the Comet Medal was.
  • There is Galaxy music playing throughout- Gusty Garden in areas 1-3, 4-5 has Good Egg, and the 6 has Bowser's Galaxy Reactor

I died 332 times during the mission. The worst part is that you have to start the level all over again. Cosmic Rosalina does not show up. Trust me, I played this level over 100 times in one session and she didn't show up once. After about 150 tries, I had to ignore my pride, and take on a Co-Star. After seeing what a Co-Star can do, I realized I should have taken one on earlier to make my life easier. They don't make this mission extremely easy, because I kept dying over 100 more times. I used about 8 Co-Stars, coopting Archive staff members Doug and Joe, as well as other visitors to the Archive who were waiting to play videogames. I ultimately got the Star with John as my Co-Star. With his help, I got it in 10 tries. Thanks to everyone who helped me.

Co-Stars are invaluable in the 6th area, because they can knock down the Hammer and Boomerang Bros. If the enemies are near the edge, they can knock them off the platforms and you don't have to deal with them. After taking out the Boomerang Bros., the Star does not appear, but a Launch Star does. When you launch you launch to the connection the Gate planet from Galaxy. The Observatory music plays. Rosalina stands on the planet, and near her, the Star hovers. You can't go into the house. After all I went through to get this Star, I didn't want to risk falling and dying by checking the underside of the planet. Rosalina says "Mario... So you were the one who collected all of the scattered stars... I want to thank you... Your deeds will live on in the memory of the cosmos... May the stars shine down on you..." I jumped to get the last Star.

A message has been sent to the Wii Message Board.

Interlude

Mario lands back on the deck of the S.S. Mario.

Lubba- "Chee?" Well, I'll be... All your hard work has brought the lady of the shooting stars right to our own little ship! "Chee?" Feels like forever since we've seen each other. But she hasn't changed!

Lubba draws our attention to Rosalina standing next to him on the green patch on the deck.

Rosalina- "Oh!" I want to give you my thanks.

That's it. She doesn't give you anything but her thanks. This is another violation of the reward principle. Oh, well. It's over! It's finally over! Thanks to everyone who helped me. After defeating the Boomerang Bros. I shook John's hand vigorously and he says I nearly broke it, which is untrue. I was extremely happy that I beat this game. What shall I play next?

Grandmaster Galaxy - The Ultimate Test

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
The map icon for this galaxy is a trophy that chimes when S.S. Mario is nearby. With a title like "The Ultimate Test", you know you're in for a challenge. Make no mistake: this is not Grand Finale Galaxy from Galaxy. This is no cakewalk. We have to go through six planets to the Star.
The first planet is a 2D area with Swing Flowers, Paragoombas, Bullet Bills, and bombs. Yoshi Star music plays. Green Toad is there when we land, saying "YOSHIIIIII!" Next to him, is a Yoshi egg, so break open the shell and swing to the other side. There are only three platforms to stand on. Timing is important and it is a bad idea in some areas to swing backwards, because you'll swing into a bomb or a Goomba. At the end, there is a Launch Star above a flagpole. You can either ditch Yoshi or hover up to the Launch Star, but I didn't figure that out until the last Star.
The next planet is a 5x5 flipswitch planet with lasers taking up 4 of the squares. The background is an 8-bit Mario/ Fire Luigi/ block background. I went around the square, then cleared the five in the middle, which should be done with care because all four lasers will fire at you. After clearing all of the flipswitches, a Launch Star appears, back where you landed.
The next planet is another 2D area. This area has a midgate. The music changes to Sky Station music. Blue Toad says "Move along now. Nothing to see here. I'm on CLOUD control! Haha! Get it? Instead of "crowd", I said... Aww, never mind. Wow, tough galaxy..." Yes, it is a tough galaxy. Nearby is a Cloud Flower and fans, as well as an electric fence maze. Once you get used to it, you can do some pretty awesome acrobatics in this level. There are no enemies here to worry about. There are several Cloud Flowers so you can recharge. Hitting an electric fence is instant death, so be careful. If you time your jumps carefully, you can launch with 3 clouds for the next area.
This is where things became really challenging for me. There is another midgate here. We find Yellow and Red Toad sleeping nearby. Red Toad says "Zzz.. exploration... zzz.." and Yellow Toad says "Zzz... Star Bits... zzz..." Past them, are some disappearing green platforms to Flip-Swap platforms and spiked lasers that make laser rings. There are also Octopi that make coconuts/ fire rocks aimed for you. Past four lasers is the Launch Star.
The next area has moving electric fences. Some are over giant blocks that are your platforms. Pink Toad is there, who says "I get to see Mario/ Luigi at work! Whoa..."After the blocks, we have to use the Pull Star the rest of the way, dealing with moving electric fences and Paragoombas. Towards the end, there is a stationary electric fence, and a Pull Star near by. Just sling past the Paragoomba and sling back over to the platform near the Launch Star, using the Pull Star over the platform.
The next area, the last area, is where the nightmare truly begins. The music switches over to Bowser's Galaxy Generator. It's crawling with Hammer Bros. and 3 Boomerang Bros. There are also flipping platforms. Towards the end, off the right edge of one of the platforms, is the last Comet Medal. After fighting and dodging my way through, I was surprised to find that after taking out all of the Boomerang Bros., the Star appeared. Phew! (You don't have to beat any of the Hammer Bros.)
This is undeniably a difficult level. You may want to consider getting a Co-Star to make your life easier. I didn't use a Co-Star, so I died 68 times. On the next Take, I got the Medal, beat all of the Boomerang Bros., and the Star appeared.
Star Get #241, 49 Comet Medals, 9561 Star Bits, 2732 Coins, 19 Lives
After getting this Star, nothing happens. If you talk to Lubba after this Star, he'll say "I wonder what happens when you get 9,999 Star Bits? Something nice, I bet!"
As you can see, I've been keeping track of how many Star Bits. Due to depositing some Star Bits much earlier in the game, I have more than enough to max out my account. I put in the amount needed to reach 9999 and Banktoad gives us a 1-up and says "Unbelievable! So many (Star Bits)! I can't even hold onto any more for you... What to do..." And nothing happens. Until you step on the launch pad, that is. Then we see the Prankster Comet icon over Grand Master Galaxy. It's time to get the very last Star!

Flip-Out Galaxy - Green Star 2

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This is the last Green Star! Unfortunately, I had a hard time with it. This Green Star is special: it is the only one out of 120 that takes place in a Prankster Comet mission. (None of them take place in hidden Star missions.) This Star is very close to the Power Star, between 2 of the ledges. This took me a long time to get, partly due to the fact that it took me a while to figure out where to jump from to get the Star. Also complicating matters are the Cosmic Clones. I died 98 times, from being knocked off the level, by Clones, spikes, bad jumps, and spiders. Sometimes, I made it up to the Power Star and tried to fall on the Star from up there, but I missed every time I tried. On Take 99, I got the Star by lining Luigi up with the Star while wall-jumping up the ledges and just wall-jumped and spun. Beware of Clones coming after you, because they will knock you off if they touch you. If I had known this earlier, it probably wouldn't have taken me so many tries. This is a Star of all Types.

Star Get #240, Galaxy Complete!, 9545 Star Bits, 23 Lives
The Green Star Challenge is complete! That was an interesting trip and twist. It's time to finish the last two Stars! After getting Green Star #120, the faceship can now advance to the final Galaxy! The final challenge awaits! Let's finish this!

Stone Cyclone Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This was a difficult Star for me to get and it was one of my worst performances, but the worst is still yet to come, and there are only three other Stars after this. I died several times, notably by either falling off the planet or being crushed by a Tox Box. To make an extremely long post short, I died 110 times trying to get this Star. This Star can't be reach by long-jumping or backflipping, so I tried to slow down time and jump off of a Tox Box to get it. I was ultimately successful after many tries. I got a 1-up and walked up the Tox Box when time slowed down. I jumped to get the Star while time was still slowed down. There may be an easier way to do this. This is a Star of all Types.

Star Get #239, Galaxy Complete!, 9525 Star Bits, 15 Lives

Shiverburn Galaxy - Green Star 3

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!

This Star is on the third planet. You can't reach it with regular jumps, because it is high above a cloud. This means that you have to keep a Cloud Suit on through the first 2 planets with a couple of clouds left. The only place to get a Cloud Suit/ more clouds is on the first planet, so you can't take any damage or use up your entire cloud supply. This is like a Daredevil run. This took me 20 Takes. During some of the takes, I returned to the map after losing my Cloud Suit. On Take 20, I reached the cloud, took the 1-up, and backflipped, used a cloud, backflipped again, and spun to get the Star. This is a Type 1, Type 3.

Star Get #238, Galaxy Complete!, 8526 Star Bits, 2727 Coins, 25 Lives

Chompworks Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!

This Star caused me a great deal of grief. It's just off the planet you land on, but you have to deal with the Chomp assembly line. To make a long story short, I died a lot of times from being knocked off by Chomps, jumping off accidently, or taking too many hits from Chomps. All told, I died 59 times. On Take 51, I came up with a new strategy to jump around the Chomps instead of over them. I jumped back (towards the camera) and spun to land back on the assembly line to dodge the Chomps. This worked well on Take 60, where I also hung onto the edge of the assembly line and climbed back up when the Chomp passed. I spun twice to dodge each Chomp, got on the assembly line, quickly lined up Luigi for the jump, then long-jumped and spun to the Star. This is a Star of all Types.

Star Get #237, Galaxy Complete!, 8448 Star Bits, 10 Lives

Melty Monster Galaxy - Green Star 3

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This green Star is found in A Stroll Down Rolling Lane. This is just great: I have to find a Green Star in a mission I had a ton of trouble with. I got the Rock Shroom and launched to the midgate. I died because I went between the bumper barriers. I'm off to a great start.
Take 2- I saw the Green Star to the right of the 2nd bumper of the path right before the Star. I got a 1-up, but missed the Green Star and instead got the original Power Star. Are you kidding me? I struggled to get this Star earlier, but got it on my 2nd Take?
Takes 3-17 - I missed the Star or rolled off before I got near it. I got 1-ups in nearly every Take, but gave up after Take 4 to pursue other Stars.
Take 18- On the last planet before the Power Star, I turned after hitting the first bumper and did not hit the second, which is critical to getting the Star. You won't be able to turn in time to get the Star if you hit the second bumper. I also got a 1-up and a 100 Star Bit 1-up. This is a Star of all Types.

We're almost done with the Green Star Challenge! The next few Stars gave me a lot of difficulty, but I got through them in one game session, leaving me with the final two Stars to tackle.

Melty Monster Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This is a similar challenge to Shiverburn's Green Star 1. The Star is near the Launch Star over one of the lava planets. At first, I couldn't use the Pulls Stars well and died from the Blaargs.
Take 2- I fell in the lava and died from Blaargs.
Take 3- See Take 2.
Take 4- See Take 2. I almost had it that time.
Take 5- I got a Life Shroom near the lower set of Blaargs and died in the lava.
Take 6- I got the Star this time. I used the top Pull Star to get it, carefully using it to get momentum. This is a Star of all Types.

Shiverburn Galaxy - Green Star 2

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This Star is on the second planet. Due to the lava, I had a difficult time with this level. It took me twelve tries, but I made it to the other side of the second planet by taking a gutsy shortcut- long jump from the first planet and make clouds to the 2nd planet, which will get you to the other side of the planet where the Star is. It's to the left of the rock with the 1-up and it's right by the lava wall. I walked on the rocks and jumped to get the Star. This is a Type 1, Type 2 Star.
Green Star Get #114!
Star Get #234, 7499 Star Bits, 2728 Coins, 2 Lives

Space Storm Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This Star is a little tricky to get. It's high above the first Launch Star, so high, that you must use the Pull Stars creatively to get it. I missed it twice and gave up before getting it. After being hit by an Amp, and trying to get the Star several times unsuccessfully, I used the top right point Pull Star (if you view the moving Pull Stars as star or pentagon shaped), then the top Pull Star to reach the Star. There is some timing involved with using the Pull Stars. You shouldn't hold onto them the entire time, so you can sling yourself past them. If you time it right, you'll be able to go farther. This is a Type 1, Type 3 Star.

Stone Cyclone Galaxy - Green Star 2

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This Star is easier to get than Green Star 1. I got a 1-up and skipped the first Star and saw one over the black hole on the near the Power Star. I missed the Star when I long-jumped. I gave up to pursue other Stars.
Take 2- I took a hit from an Octoomba and died from a bad jump.
Take 3- I walked off the planet.
Take 4- I got a 1-up and was crushed by a Tox Box.
Take 5- I got a 1-up and missed the Star.
Take 6- I got a 1-up and long-jumped from the corner next to a time-freezing switch to the Star. This is a Type 1, Type 2 Star.
Green Star Get #112!
Star Get #232, 7426 Star Bits, 9 Lives

Boo Moon Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This Star took me a long time to find, and a while to locate. It is easy to miss, because after you launch from the first planet, you can no longer control the camera to look around. However, it is visible immediately after landing. It is too high to reach immediately. It took me a while, but I figured out how to get it by thinking about the planet like a house and that the Star is on the ceiling. The Star is accessible once the planet flips up 90 degrees twice, because the first flip forms the wall and the second, the ceiling. While riding the snake platform to the hidden Star, before you reach it, long jump and spin to the green Star. This is a Star of all Types.

Space Storm Galaxy - Green Star 3

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This Star is near Topman Tower. When I landed at the base of the Tower, I hit the switch to get rid of the fence. I slowed time down because I heard the Star, but missed it. I climbed higher on the Tower and saw the Star far out from the Tower, with one of the water blasters aimin right for it. It's the fourth one on the right when looking at them while on the base. I let the water bubble carry me to the Star. This is a Star of all Types.

Bowser's Gravity Gauntlet - Green Star 2

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This one was a little hard to find. I tripped the midgate after hitting a firebar and a Podoboo. I heard the Star while I was in the water. I tripped the midgate and got 2 1-ups. I took some damage, got another 1-up, but realized that I missed the Star, so I left to pursue other Stars.
Take 2- I tripped the midgate, took damage from lava and Podoboos. I got 2 1-ups and tripped the next midgate. I got another 1-up and found the Star over the item block near the water. I jumped on the block and backflipped and spun to get it. This is a Type 1 Star.

Chompworks Galaxy - Green Star 3

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This Star can be annoying to get. I launched to the midgate and got a 1-up. I died from the lava after being knocked in by Chomps. I gave up to pursue other Stars.
Take 2- I missed the Launch Star due to a bad spring jump.
Take 3- I launched to the midgate and got a 1-up. A Chomp knocked me into the lava, but I made it to the Launch Star. I tripped the midgate with only one health bar remaining. I saw the Star above the right turret. I went up the second moving platform and spring-jumped to the right ontothe turret, then spring-jumped to the Star, which can be a little tricky to line up. This is a Type 1 Star.

This is an easier Star to get than Green Star 1. After spinning my wheels trying to get Green Star 1, I decided to go further and see if I could find anything. I launched twice and saw the Star on the roof. I backflipped, spun, wall-jumped, and spun up to the roof to get it. This is a Type 1 Star.

Wild Glide Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This one can be a little difficult to find because it is easily overlooked and if you pass over it, you won't hear the tell-tale chime. I took hits and reached the goal, where it clearly was not.
Take 2- I missed the Star, took a hit and gave up to pursue other Stars.
Take 3- I hit a tree and died.
Take 4- I missed the Star and returned to the map.
Take 5- I thought I heard the Star in the lowest hole in a rock formation and returned to the map.
Take 6- I missed the Star, but it was where I thought it was.

Bowser's Galaxy Generator - Green Star 2

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This one is much farther into the galaxy. I got a Life Shroom, hit a firebar, took a hit from a hammer and to the Floaty Fluff to the area with the drill. I tripped the midgate and took a hit from a Banzai Bill. I got a 1-up and launched to the midgate. I then lost my Shroom to Bullet Bills and got a Cloud Suit. I took more hits and launched to the midgate. I took a hit from a Magikoopa and saw the Star by the turrets. It's out in the open, but I missed it with a long jump.
Take 2- I took a hit from a Magikoopa and got Yoshi. With Yoshi, I hovered to the Star. This is a Type 2, Type 3 Star.

Bowser's Galaxy Generator - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
I got a Life Shroom and launched. I took a hit from a hammer and fell off the Floaty Fluff. I fell in the lava too many times and died. While in the lava, I heard the Star.
Take 2- I got a Life Shroom and fell off the planet because I missed the Launch Star.
Take 3- I got a Life Shroom and found the Star in the lower right corner of the lava, somewhat towards the front using the Floaty Fluff. I fell on the Star with to get it. This is a Type 1, Type 2 Star.

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This Star is in the Sorbetti mission. I launched and took 2 hits from an ice demon. I launched to the planet experiencing the blizzard and heard the Star. Unfortunately, I can't find it. I walked over to the edge of the planet where I could faintly see a coin. I don't know what's out there, so I never went while completing the Sorbetti mission. It's time to take a leap of faith. I don't like leaps of faith, but it's for a Star. Here goes! I land on a star-shaped planet with 3 1-up Shrooms. I should have come down here sooner! The Star is here, too. Just jump to get it. When we land in the galaxy, we here the jungle music, so I'm looking for the Star somewhere in the slide mission. We talk to the Whittles, who question Luigi's bravery. Cosmic Cove Galaxy - Green Star 2

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
Once again, I missed a Star. It's very close to Green Star 3, so their chimes overlap, sounding like one. It took me 4 tries to get it, one of which I returned to the map, because I passed it. Near the moving bomb, at the right edge of the water area, is a block. We can't stand on the block and long jump to the Star, but we can leave the water, wall jump off the block, and get the Star, right in front of the black hole. This is a Star of all Types.

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
We land back in the galaxy in the mission where we must save the Luma in the cage. We land in the galaxy and hear a Star. I look all over the beach, but it turns out it's the Luma making the noise. After being frozen by an ice demon, I go into the green pipe and trip the midgate. After taking 3 hits from an eel, I determine that the antfarm level is free of green Stars. We reach the end green pipe and trip the midgate. I hear the Star. I take a hit from a bomb and get a 1-up. I get a glimpse of the Star near the key. Take 2- I tripped the next midgate and fell off, but ditched Yoshi to save myself. Near the last wall are some swing flowers. This took me several tries, but if you jump from the highest, farthest on (on the right), and hover, then ditch Yoshi, you can get the Star. This is a Type 1, Type 3 Star.

This Star is closer to the Power Star. After tripping 2 midgates, we find the Star on the 2nd vertical wall we must climb. It's just off the edge, but we over shot it and fell off.
Take 2- This time I got the Star. I nearly fell off twice, but saved myself by ditching Yoshi and waiting for him to reappear in a nest. We found a way to stop on the purple block by hovering, and use it as a platform, then jump off it and hover to the Star. This is a Star of all Types.

We hear the Star very early on near the vertical wall. But it's not near the Launch Star, so we have to climb higher. This isn't easy: it requires precise steering to run up the left side of the wall without running into anything. I saved myself several times, but ultimately ran off the wall.
Take 2- I saved myself by hovering many times, but eventually fell off.
Take 3- See Take 2.
Take 4- After much trial and a 100 Star Bit 1-up, I ran up the wall. On top is a 1-up as well as Penguru. He says that skill has brought us very far. Yes, I know I skipped Green Star 2. Sometimes, I did not get the Stars in numerical order. I'm just posting them in the order I got them.

Boulder Bowl Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
We land back in the galaxy and soon hear the Star. It's on top of the bridge, so do not get the Rock Shroom. It will make your life extremely difficult. Fortunately, I noticed the Star before I got it. I tried wall jumping up the now vertical rails of the bridge- don't knock it over. I went over the edge of the bridge- it's extremely thin at the top, so proceed with caution.
Take 2- I took a hit from a green Octoomba. With several attempts, I wall jumped up the bridge, spinning between jumps to gain altitude, to the top. Make sure you're not pushing the joystick to control the character into the bridge. It should only be right and left, no intermediate directions. Once on top of the bridge, very carefully walk to the center (just right or left) and backflip and spin to the Star. This can be a very tricky and frustrating Type 3 Star.

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
While traveling through the galaxy, I get 3-up from the musical notes, and a 1-up from the coins in the green pipe. Once I trip the midgate and get past some of the saws, I see the Star underneath the wood I'm about to stand on. The Star is underneath the wood where the 1-up Shroom is. We wait on the wood in front of the saw in front of the 1-up. The wood sinks after the saw is finished cutting. We walk to and get the Star. (Depending on where you stand, you might have to jump for it.) This is a Star of all 3 Types.

When we reach the saws, we see the Star high near the wall near Comet Medal. I missed the Star because I needed a wall from which to wall jump. I tried to long jump, but fell off.
Take 2- I backflipped from the semi-circular piece of wood and spun to the Star. This is a Type 3 Star.

Puzzle Plank Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
We see a Star in the cutscenes that near the saws. We land back in the galaxy and find the first Star above an item block. It's very high above the block, making this a Type 3 Star. I broke the block when I pounded the spring, so I can't get it. I returned to the map.
Takes 2-9- I broke the block and returned to the map.
Take 10- I finally figured out how to get the Star. I got very close on other Takes, but ultimately was able to get the Star. When pounding the spring, direct away from under the block and spin (and possibly wall jump off the block) to get on top of the block. Once you land on the block, you may want to stop using the joystick so you don't fall off. Then backflip and spin to the Star.

Bowser Jr.'s Fiery Flotilla - Green Star 2

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This Star was a little tricky to find. On my first try, I passed it entirely, ending up on the planet where you battle Gobblegut. I returned to the map to try again.
Take 2- I approach the Thwomp and I think I hear the Star. Unfortunately, I died trying to backflip onto the Thwomp.
Take 3- I found the Star on the planet with the lava after the first Sling Star. The Star is between "solar" flares. Despite having a Life Shroom, I died from the lava.
Take 4- I got the Life Shroom again. I long jumped from where the Launch Star is and spun to get the Star. This is a Type 1, Type 2 Star.

Bowser Jr.'s Fiery Flotilla - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
Here's where Star placement starts to get really creative: places you didn't think you could reach. After making my way to the door of the fortress (taking damage along the way), and slinging to the midgate, I hear the star. I hit a fire bar and fell into the lava, and I saw the Star on one of the turrets. How am I supposed to get up there? Well, I can't go there now because I just slung and I fell in the lava and died.
Take 2- I decide that it would be a good idea to ride on the top of the Thowmp to reach the top of the fortress. Unfortunately, a bad back flip was my downfall.
Take 3- I took the Thwomp again, but this time, long jumped, wall-jumped, and then spun to reach the top of the castle. The designers really wanted us to explore everything they put in the game. There is a 1-up on top of the front wall. If you go to the left, to the far turret, you will find the Star. This is a Type 1, Type 3 Star.

Then I look up, waaaaay up, and see the Star directly above where we landed. This is a Type 1, Type 3. It's too high up for a mere backflip and spin. Take 2- I died from a Thwomp.
Take 3- I didn't get the Star, but I took a hit from a Goomba and died from a Thwomp.
Take 4- See Take 3.
Take 5- I found the Star above Green Toad, who is to the right of the 2nd set of Thwomps. We have to ride the third Thwomp in the pink gravity zone, then long jump to Green Toad. We backflip, then spin to get the Star. This is a Type 1, Type 3 Star.

We sling to the Piranha Plant, which produces a vine when defeated. We take the pipe into the 2D antfarm and hear the Star, which is over the 2nd patch of dirt near a yellow drill. This Star isn't too difficult to find: they show you where it is in the cutscenes. It's high above a red platform early in the galaxy. This is a Type 1 Star. Just stand underneath its shadow and backflip, then spin. You should get this on your first try because spinning will flip the platform out from under you, and you'll fall off if you don't get the Star. Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
I defeated the Magikoopa and got Yoshi. (You need him for this Star.) I took a hit from an Octoomba and launched to the midgate. I launched again and took a hit from a Piranha Plant. I used the Swing Flowers to reach the Launch Star, launched, tripped the midgate, and fell off.
Take 2- I got a 1-up from pulling out a platform. I took hits from a spider and a Goomba, before finding the Star. The Star is near the Power Star, but high above the Swing Flowers, which makes it a Type 3 Star. It took me several tries, but I finally timed a jump off of Yoshi to get it. You might be able to hover with Yoshi, but jumping off Yoshi is what worked for me.

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
It's time to find another green Star! I took out the Magikoopa and got 3-up in the bonus area. I took a hit from an Octoomba and found the Star near the orange plant that yields a Launch Star. It's a Type 1 and Type 2 Star, as it is on the side of the planet over the void. I used Yoshi to get it, so I could recover if necessary. It's not too difficult to get, but care should be used.

Yoshi Star Galaxy - Green Star 1

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
We see this Star in the cutscenes before flying into the galaxy, so we already know where it is: above the Comet Medal on the hill. This is a Type 1 Star, and the cutscene made finding this Star extremely easy. I took a hit from a red, spiky plant, backflipped onto the hill, and jumped to get the Star. That was easy!

Sky Station Galaxy - Green Star 3

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
This time, we land in the Storming the Sky Fleet version of Sky Station. I got a 1-up in the treasure chest and launched to the midgate. I wander into the interior of the cylindrical planet. I hear that the Star is somewhere in here. I am hit by an Amp and find the Star high above the bonus area disc. I backflipped, wall-jumped, and spun to get it. This is a Type 1 Star.

This time, when we get a Galaxy Complete!, a gold crown appears next to the galaxy's map symbol.

Sky Station Galaxy - Green Star 2

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
I got a 1-up from the orange pipe, and found Green Star 1, now clear, where I found it. I took a hit from a Goomba, and launched, after not finding anything else of interest. I got 7 1-ups from the platforms, the musical notes, and the bonus area. I tripped the midgate, but fell off the planet after getting the bonus area 1-ups.
Take 2- I got the 3-up from the musical notes, and heard the Star, but couldn't find it. I adjusted my camera angle and realized that this was a Type 1 and Type 2 Star. I found it on the other side of the platform where the Luma transforms into a Launch Star, where the rising platforms are. I hopped off the planet and let gravity take me to the Star, which was floating over nothing. If I had missed, I would have died.

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
Let's start collecting Green Stars! When we select a Green Star Comet mission, we can choose to complete whichever mission we want. Each galaxy has an equal number of Green Stars as it does Power Stars. The missions are given creative titles such as Green Star 1, Green Star 2, and Green Star 3. The numbers reset back to 1 for each galaxy, so there's no counting up to 120 in the mission title.
We land back in the galaxy. I immediately get the 1-up using the orange pipe. This is a Type 1 Star.I hear the chiming of the first Green Star near the pipes and see its shine. It's right next to the house at the edge. I backflipped, wall-jumped, and spun to get it. You can also get it by walking off the roof of the house, if you'd like. That was easy!

Super Luigi Galaxy 2: The Green Star Challenge Is On!

All right! We got all 120 Stars! Time for Super Luigi Galaxy 2, right? Nope. Here's the slight change in plans I mentioned much earlier. After switching to Luigi, which we can do at any time now by going behind the deck to the area marked with Luigi's L, I tried to go through Sky Station, but the Star was clear. Then, I remembered that I had to battle Bowser once more, so I switched back to Mario. It took me 2 tries to reach Bowser and I beat him on the 2nd try. After the credits roll, we see Rosalina in the Library, closing a book. She says "Ohh" and we see Baby Luma still holding Mario's hat.
Rosalina: Ahh, good. Everyone's together now. Next, let's hear a story about the jewels of the cosmos...Let me tell you the story of the Green Stars.
Baby Luma puts on the hat. (Rosalina: Yes, Baby Luma, you look absolutely adorable in that hat. But I'm sure Mario would like that back.)
Rosalina: This is a story from long, long ago...
This game is somewhat like the "Blues Brothers" in that it thoroughly engrosses you that you don't realize that this is all just a story. It's like the first lines of the song "Tomorrow Never Dies": "Life is a story... I've already written."
A message appears: Prankster Comets have appeared!
When we choose our file, we find a silver crown on it. When we start the file, Lubba greets us on the deck. Let's get the handful of green Stars we need so we can get started on Super Luigi Galaxy 2.
Lubba: "Chay!" You've really done it now! Prankster Comets are swarming all over the universe! See for yourself!
After gettting 5-ups from Peach's letter, we step on the panel that activates the faceship. We see Prankster Comets falling all throughout the universe. Now each galaxy has a green comet marker.
Lubba: "Chay!" AY-O! Did ya see that? Those Prankster Comets were green! That means there are Green Stars around now! Those must be the Cosmic Jewels I keep hearing about! Those Green Stars are pretty hard to find, so keep your eyes and ears peeled. Take it away, Captain!
Lubba's advice to keep your eyes and ears open is very good. I personally recommend using headphones in trying to get the green Stars, because it helped me tell if the Star was to the left or right.
Basically, there are 3 types of green Stars, and any green Star can be a combination of the 3.
Type 1: These Stars are hidden around the galaxy. Getting to them is can be simple, but you have to find them first. Some are easy to find, others will require to check areas you may have missed the first time around. They're kind of like the untimed Purple Coin missions in Galaxy: they get you to fully explore the galaxy that you may have missed in your haste to get the Star.
Type 2: I get the feeling that the level designers are saying: "Jump to your death. If you do it correctly, you'll get a Star. If not, you'll die." These Stars are out over the abyss and will require you to jump off the planet to get the Star. Aim is everything here.
Type 3: These Stars will be waiting in plain sight, but just out of reach. You'll have to solve a puzzle as to how to get the Star.
Things that make this easy: The game starts the green Stars out easily enough, so you can make quick progress if you start from World 1. Some of the green Star locations are revealed in the opening cutscenes before flying to the galaxy: some are shown and some can be heard. Most of the Stars will not occur in the galaxy's original Comet missions.
Things that make this difficult: The green Stars make the same chiming sound as the regular Stars and Lumas, and a similar chiming sound as Star Bits, so you may be just hearing one of those, instead of a green Star, which can be incredibly confusing. Some of the Stars are also placed in close proximity, so that their chiming overlaps, making you think that you're hearing one when you're really hearing two. The green Stars also don't disappear nor stop chiming once you've collected them. They only turn clear, which may make you think there's another Star in the area, when it's just the one you've already collected making noise. Changing your camera angle is very important and it can be very difficult to locate a Star in areas where your control over the camera is disabled.
Other than that, this is a pretty interesting challenge and I didn't see it coming. It's a nice change over repeating everything with Luigi. Since Luigi's been begging me to let him help (and because his clothes match the Stars), I'm going to get all of the Green Stars with him. Let's go!

Flip-Out Galaxy - Cosmic Clone Wall Jumpers

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
Cosmic Clones? As if I didn't have enough problems with this galaxy. We land back in the galaxy to find nothing out of the ordinary. We warp through the green pipe, and as soon as we leap out, the Clones appear. They follow us, copying our every move. I reach the midgate, but fall off soon after.
Take 2- I fell off because I didn't jump high enough.
Take 3- I was knocked off by the spikes.
Take 4- I fell off.
Take 5- See Take 4.
Take 6- I took my headphones off, but died from the clones.
Take 7- I reached the next midgate, but died from spikes.
Take 8- I got a 1-up and died from the Clones.
Take 9- I fell off.
Take 10- I got a 1-up and died from the spikes.
Take 11- I got a 100 Star Bit 1-up, a 1-up, and died from spikes.
Take 12- I was knocked off by spikes.
Take 13- I died from spikes.
Take 14- See Take 9.
Take 15- I got a 100 Star Bit 1-up and died from the spikes. Timing is even more important here.
Take 16- Cosmic Rosalina appears again. I am seriously tempted, but I don't use her help. I was knocked off by spikes.
Take 17- I fell off trying to long jump.
Take 18- See Take 12.
Take 19- I got a 100 Star Bit 1-up and fell off from a bad long jump.
Take 20- I got a 1-up and died from Clones.
Take 21- I fell off near the Star. Curses!
Take 22- See Take 13.
Take 23- I died from Clones.
Take 24- I died from a bad jump.
Take 25- I was knocked off by the wall due to a bad shake.
Take 26- See Take 15.
Take 27- See Take 23.
Take 28- I got a 1-up and died from spikes.
Take 29- See Take 24.
Take 30- I almost made it to the Star, but fell off.
Take 31- I died from spikes. I had one life left, so I got 22 lives from Sky Station.
Take 32- I made it back to the 2nd midgate after starting over. I died from a spider.
Take 33- I fell off.
Take 34- I finally made it to the Star, this time, unharmed! This requires steady nerves and patience. The timing used in Wicked Wall Jumps should be used here. Another thing to note is the Clones can and will knock you off when wall jumping up to the Star. When wall jumping, there is a slight drop in height, where a Clone can come in above you, run into you, preventing you from jumping or saving yourself. This Star requires lots of care.

Interlude
We once again land on the base. Chee? Lubba says we brought back another green one. He reminds us that these guys are really rare and that he's speechless. Nice work! The green Luma has something to tell us. Green Lumas can't be that rare: we found 4 in Galaxy. The green Luma tells us even with every Power Star, we must defeat the monster, or never see the Cosmic Jewels. Okay, so we have to beat Bowser again before we get these jewels the Lumas have been talking about.

Boss Blitz Galaxy - Throwback Throwdown Speed Run

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
We have 5 minutes to beat all five bosses. Time stops during cutscenes, but we have to make the most out of every second. I got the Life Shroom under King Kaliente's planet, but lost a lot of time and the Life Shroom fighting Major Burrows, leaving me with 2 minutes to deal with Bouldergeist, who is one of the more time-consuming bosses. I beat Bouldergeist, but ran out of time just as I reached the launch Star.
Take 2- I lost my Life Shroom to Kaliente and had 3 minutes left to beat Major Burrows. I got a 100 Star Bit 1-up, but ran out of time after I beat Bouldergeist.
Take 3- I lost time battling Major Burrows and died after beating Bouldergeist. I did get a 100 Star Bit 1-up, however.
Take 4- I decided to ignore the Life Shroom so I'd have more time. It was a good idea because it left me with 3 minutes to beat Bouldergeist. I had 1:15 for Fiery Dino Piranha and beat him with less than 30 seconds left. I was again winning by the skin of my teeth, as I had only one bar of health left. I don't like cutting it this close, but I got the Star.

A Comet appears in Flip-Out Galaxy. Just what I don't need.

Wild Glide Galaxy - Jungle Fluzzard Race

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!
We land in the galaxy to find 4 Jibberjays waiting with Fluzzard. We talk to the black Jibberjay, who says he never loses a race. He's the one to beat. However, there are other Jibberjays as our competition. It's kind of like the penguin races in Galaxy. On my first try, I took 3rd place, lost a life, and gave up to pursue other Stars.
Take 2- I took some hits and got 4th. This isn't as easy as I thought it would be.
Take 3- I took a hit before diving into the water. I gave up to pursue other Stars.
Take 4- I took hits before drowing.
Take 5- I took a hit and drowned.
Take 6- See Take 5.
Take 7- I hit the wall.
Take 8- See Take 2. At least I made it to the goal.
Take 9- See Take 3.
Takes 10-13- See Take 5.
Take 14- I got into 2nd place, but drowned.
Take 15- See Take 14.
Take 16- See Take 5.
Takes 17-19- I drowned.
Take 20- I took 2nd place. Almost there!
Take 21- See Take 17.
Take 22- I took too many hits. I gave up to pursue other Stars.
Take 23- I finally took first place! This requires a lot of swooping, diving, and control. As the black Jibberjay will take the lead, it is best to follow him to understand the best path, which is low, close to the ground. I took 2 hits on the way. The black Jibberjay says he lost and that he's no leader. We should be the new leader and the new leader gets a Star! Star Get #118, Galaxy Complete!, 21 Lives
Interlude
We land on the base of the faceship. Lubba says "Chee?", and that we brought back a really LOUD bird. "Chush" Do we hear the tranquil song of the stars? No? It's tough to hear over the yappin' Jibberjay! Lubba asks us to go over and try to quiet it down for a bit. We find it near the brim of the faceship. He says the trick to going fast with Fluzzard is to point down to dive and keep diving to go fast. We should dive whenever we can. Unfortunately, because I won this race after the one in Fleet Glide, this information is completely useless to me. Oh, well. Let's just move on.

Fleet Glide Galaxy - Fastest Feathers in the Galaxy

Welcome Back to the Galaxy!

It's time to answer the Jibberjay's letter for a race. We land back in the galaxy to find only the black Jibberjay present. All we have to do is race him to the sun at the end. Are you ready for another upside-down magic carpet ride out of the Cave of Wonders? I don't know if this Jibberjay is crazy, but there's a Star in it for us if we win. We only need to race him, because he otherwise takes first in Wild Glide Galaxy. On my first try, I took too many hits.
Take 2- I got the Life Shroom this time, but I hit a wall.
Take 3- I died from lava.
Take 4- See Take 1.
Take 5- I hit the wall.
Take 6- I hit the Thwomp.
Take 7- See Take 5.
Take 8- I got the Life Shroom, but hit the floor. This is not an easy level for me. Tight control is required for this mission. I found I did better standing up. It might have given me some better perspective.
Take 9- See Take 5.
Take 10- See Take 5.
Take 11- I made it to the sun in first place. Yes! This mission requires a lot of swooping, so I found it best to go for broke, but you can't tilt the Wiimote too extremely. Tilting it too far to the left or right will send you down. Also, tilting up will slow you down, but you won't gain much altitude, so only use it to dodge. The Jibberjay can't believe it. He says he's not good enough to be leader. We should be the new leader and take the trophy. He then calls us boss. That's much more respect than we're getting from The Chimp.
