Cavern of the Metal Cap - 8 Red Coins

This mission is unique to the N64.
We jump back into Hazy Maze Cave and go into the undergroud cavern with Dorrie. We steer Dorrie to the set of double doors on the right and go through them. We find another inky pool, like the one we used to get to the Hazy Maze Cave. We land in a stone corridor as Metal Mario. A remix of the Wing Cap music plays. We get a message: "Welcome to the Metal Cap Switch Course! Once you step on the Cap Switch, the green blocks will become solid. When you turn your body into metal with the Metal Cap, you can walk underwater! Try it!"
We can now run through enemies as if we had a Starman. We leave the corridor with the Snifits and enter an area with a fast moving current of water. We cross the bridge and find two Red Coins in an alcove with a 1-up. Because we are metal, we sink to the bottom of the water and are not affected by the current. If we are in the water without the Metal Cap, we will be pushed out of the waterfall by the current, unless we wash up on one of the rocks that serve as platforms. Near the waterfall that is producing the current, in the center of an island, is a large green switch, just like the one we saw in the Wing Cap course. We step on it, as our power is running out, and get a message: "You've just stepped on the Metal Cap Switch! The Metal Cap Switch makes Mario invincible. Now Metal Caps will pop out of all the green blocks you find. Would you like to save? Yes/No"
We got the two Red Coins that were behind the switch and used the Metal Cap, in the block nearby, to get the last four Red Coins that surround the island underwater. The Star appears underwater, so make sure to have the Metal Cap when going for it.

Hazy Maze Cave - Swimming Beast in the Cavern

N64
In the room with the partially flooded hallway, there is a door with a star on the left. In the center of the room is a pool. In the corner on the lower level is Toad, who says "Hold onto your hat! If you lose it, you'll be injured easily. If you do lose your cap, you'll have to find it in the course where you lost it. Oh, boy, it's not looking good for Peach. She's still trapped somewhere inside the walls. Please, Mario, you have to help her! Did you know that there are enemy worlds inside the walls? Yup. It's true. Bowser's troops are there, too. Oh, here, take this. I've been keeping it for you." A Star appears. That was nice. Toad had a Star hidden for us. We must talk to him more often.
Star Get #40, 5 Lives
When we jump into the pool, we find ourselves underground, with a remix of the underground theme. The path immediately forks, so we go left and long-jump across the gap over the abyss. We go through the door on the other side and take a hit from a spider. We walk across a grate circling a hole to the abyss. We see an endless stream of rocks periodically rolling into it. We jump to the grass where the rocks are rolling and dodge them, making our way up to the door to the right of the back wall. Through the door, we see a Star on the other side of a grate. We can't reach it for now, so we'll get it later. There is a 1-up in the item block near the wall. We step the elevator down into the cave. In the cave is a pool, in which a giant dinosaur swims. It's name is Dorrie, and we can safely approach it and ride it to reach places we can't reach on our own. We climb on Dorrie's back and she circles the island in the center of the pool. Dorrie will go in whichever direction we face, so we can steer it. We make Dorrie face the island and we walk up on her head and jump to the island. The Star is in the center of the island.
Star Get #41, 24 Coins, 6 Lives
Nintendo DS
If we talk to Toad in the Hazy Maze Cave room as Yoshi, he says "You don't normally wear a cap, huh, Yoshi? You should. I think one would look really good on you. Plus, my advice is only for the fashion forward. That said, let me give you this. I had it hidden for you." He gives us a Star.
Star Get 47, 4 Lives
If we talk to him again, he says "That dinosaur-skin look is so aeons (eons) ago. You know, even a cap would really spice up your look. Come back when you get one, because I have advice for the fashionably dressed." As in the N64 version, he wants to talk to us about caps, so we need someone wearing one to get the information.
If we talk to him as Luigi, he says "A piece of advice for the hapless Luigi: Even if the caps look the same, the one you've been wearing for years is special. It is said when you lose your cap, your luck runs out, too. When you're that unlucky, you shouldn't hit a ? Block... Who knows what might happen? If you lose your cap, you'll find it in the course where you lost it. Oh! Take this with you. I had it hidden." If we talk to him again, he gives us the same speech, then says "If you lose your cap, hitting a ? Block will spell disaster! But don't worry too much. If you lose your cap, you'll find it in the course where you lost it-- just look at the map below."
As Mario, he gives a similar speech to the one he give Luigi, but says "Without it (your cap), your luck turns sour! Hitting ? Blocks without a cap can be downright dangerous! Don't try it!"
We enter the Hazy Maze Cave as Mario, but it doesn't matter who we use. We long-jump across the gap to the left and enter the area with the rolling rocks. There is a bridge to the grassy area in this version. We take a hit from a rolling rock. We wall-jump near the doorway to get a 1-up on the ledge closer to the hole. We fall off the ledge and go through the door. There is a Star on the other side of the grate and a 1-up in the item block. We go down the elevator into the cavern. There is a Bob-omb Buddy near the elevator who says "Fashion trends are so fickle! Now it's yellow caps that are in! I just saw one around here. Go find it!" There is a yellow cap circling the center island on the Touch Screen map. We approach the pool to find Dorrie, with an updated sprite with goggles. On Dorrie's head is the yellow cap. We ground-pound Dorrie's back so it's head lowers and we get the cap. It shrinks to fit our head and we turn into Wario! We have more power, so we can break heavier objects. We speak to the Bob-omb Buddy again, who says "Your yellow cap is super cool! You must be a trend starter because I see them a lot around here lately. In fact, I thought I just saw one. Where was it?" We go onto the island (which we can reach without Dorrie) and see a rock where the map says the Star is. We punch the rock and the Star appears.
Star Get #48, 20 Coins, 6 Lives
The next mission is Behind the Waterfall.

Jolly Roger Bay - Switch Star of the Bay

This mission is unique to the Nintend DS.
Now that we have Luigi, we can get some new Stars. We swim into the cave. There is an item block with a Power Flower, which will have the same effect as the Vanish Cap, which we haven't found yet in the N64. It doesn't last as long as the Wing Cap, but has the same music. We get a message: "The Power Flower turned Luigi invisible. Now he'll be able to elude enemies and walk through many things. Try it out!" We run to the right wall. Behind a rock is a Star Switch, so we step on it. The Star appears in a cage. Because we are invisible, we can run right through it and get the Star. We get the Star before time and the Power Flower run out.
Star Get #46, 6 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Swimming Beast in the Cavern.

Bunnies of the Castle - Part 1

N64
After we get the key from Bowser, we can go into the basement. We go through the door to the corridor where Boo is and go downstairs instead of into the courtyard. We then go through the wooden door at the bottom of the stairs. We find ourselves in a dark hallway with flames. We find Toad in a corner to the left, and he says "Wow! You've already recovered that many Stars! Way to go, Mario! I'll bet you'll have us out of here in no time! Be careful, through. Bowser and his band wrote the book on "bad." Take my advice: when you need to recover from injuries, collect coins. Yellow Coins refill one piece of the Power Meter, Red Coins refill 2 pieces, and Blue Coins refill five. To make Blue Coins appear, pound on Blue Coins Blocks. Also, if you fall from high places, you'll minimize damage if you Pound the Ground as you land." If we wander farther into the basement, we find a rabbit hopping around. We chase it for a while around the partially flooded hallway until we catch it the corner near Shifting Sand Land. It's name is MIPS and he says "Yeeoww! Unhand me, brute! I'm late, so late, I must make haste! This shiny thing? Mine! It's mine. Finders, keepers, losers... Late, late, late... Ouch! Take it then! A gift from Bowser, it was. Now let me be! I have a date! I cannot be late for tea!" A Star appears. Star Get #39, 5 Lives He sounds like he might have been the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, but MIPS isn't white.
Nintendo DS
After we talked to Toad in the Rec Room, bunnies will start appearing around the castle. We won't be catching most of them, because I already have access to the keys and the minigames from my other files. I will provide the available locations and some of their dialogue. Each character has their own set of rabbits to catch, which are color-coded. Here are the ones we have access to at this point.

Yoshi (Yellow Rabbits)

  • There are three rabbits in front the bridge over the moat to the castle door. They will run in three separate directions.
  • Outside the castle, over the bridge to the left, there is a rabbit in a nearby flower patch.

  • There is another rabbit in the basement in front of the Lethal Lava Land painting.

Because Yoshi picks things up with his tongue, he nearly eats the rabbits to catch them. They say "Noooo! Don't eat me! I'm really tought from all the running I do. Seriously. I'd taste horrible. Let me go and I'll give you this." Yoshi will spit out the rabbit, which will say "Aiyeeeee! I thought I was going to die! My entire life flashed before my eyes. Here, tkae the key and leave me alone!" We are given a key like the one we used to get into the castle. We get a message: "You retrieve a key to the drawer fo Princess Toadstool's Rec Room! Now you can play new mini-games. Do you want to save? Save and continue / Save and play mini-games / Continue, don't save

If we talk to the rabbit again, it says "Please let me go. I promise I won't play a prank on you... At least, I won't for a while. My buddies are pros at hiding. You'll have a hard time finding us by yourself. Let someone else look for a change." The rabbits will be there everytime you go outside, regardless of whether you caught them. If you catch one again, it says "What part of "I'm not your lunch" do you not understand? I already gave you the key! Put me down!" After Yoshi spits it out, it says "I'm not chow. How many times do I have to tell you that? I know I'm irresistibly cute, but try to restrain yourself!"
Mario (Pink Rabbits)
  • There is a rabbit in the Jolly Roger Bay room.

  • There are 2 rabbits in the basement in the flooded hallway in front of the Lethal Lava Land painting.

  • When we catch one, it says "Ouch! Put me down! There's no need for violence, you big brute! I picked up the key, so it's mine. I don't see YOUR name on it. But I'll hand it over if you let me go. Here!" It will say the same thing about having someone else look if you talk to it again. If we catch it again, it says "Owww! Put me down, you horrible rabbit grabber! I already gave you back the key I sto--I mean, found!"

    Luigi (Green Rabbits)

    • There is a rabbit in the room with Mario's painting.

    • There's one in the Bob-omb Battlefield room.

    • There's another one in the courtyard in an alcove above the doorway.

When Luigi catches a rabbit, it says "I can't believe you caught me! Outrun by a human! This is the worst day of my life. Here, take the key." If you catch one again, it says "Oh, no. I can't believe I got caught again. And by such a nobody! This is really starting to damage my self-esteem." Luigi gets no respect from the NPCs in this game.

There are more rabbits to find. They will not appear on the Touch Screen map. As more areas become accessible, we will be able to catch more rabbits. We'll have to check back with different characters as we open up more areas.

Big Boo Battle - The Key to Luigi

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
It's time to save Luigi! We have to be Mario for this mission. We go into Big Boo's Haunt and go up to the third floor using the Power Flower. Through the door we find the painting of Luigi. We jump inside and find ourselves on the carousel. We continuously hear Big Boo's laughter. A sign says "Big Boo's Haunt Eee hee hee... There are no exits. You may as well wander in here forever... Listen carefully. Can you hear me? If you find me, you're history. Eee hee hee..." There is a Red Coin in the carousel room. We will leave it alone for now, because we can't get all 8 at this point. There is a Red Coin mission in Goomboss Battle, but we can't them at this point either. There are four doors to choose from. If we choose correctly, we will see another area through the doorway and continue. If we choose incorrectly, we'll be sent back to the carousel to start over. In the carousel, take the door to the right. We walk into a gray room with four doors and a Mr. I. There are disappearing bridges to the center of the room and the other doors. We take the door to the left and find ourselves in another room with four doors. In the center is an item block, which we don't need right now. The floor tilts, so don't stand on it too long. We take the door on the right into a room with checkered platforms that move when we step on them. We get a 1-up on the way. We take the door on the left to continue. If you listen closely, the laughter seems to be coming from one side of the room, either the left or the right. We find ourselves in a gray room with a large dropaway bridge and three Boos. We run across it quickly, getting a 1-up in the process. At the end are a painting of Boo and more checkered platforms. We ride the checkered platforms to the top of the room, where there is a hole in the floor. We drop through to a room with a rug, checkered floor, a large mirror, and curtains. We can see Lakitu in the reflection. We approach the mirror and our reflection turns into Luigi! Big Boo, wearing a crown, appears beside us with a laugh. He says "Eee hee hee! I am Big Boo, the spookiest of all the spirits! I locked up the wimpy green mustache man. And I'll do the same to you! Eee hee hee! Since I'm a ghost, I can turn invisible in the mirror's reflection. You'll have to attack me from behind to defeat me. But you'll die of fright before that ever happens! And then you'll be one of us!" The battle starts. We take a hit from him, because he was invisible, but had a reflection in the mirror. We lined up the shot and ground-pounded him for the first hit. He fades into a blue flame and appears to us a little later, with no reflection. We easily get in the second hit. His reflection appears in the mirror and his shadow on our side. We get in the last hit and he vansihes, saying "Eee hee hee! You can never really kill a ghost! We always come back! See you again. Eee hee hee!" The key appears and our reflection turns back into Mario. The key is like the key we used to free Mario, but with Luigi's cap and an "L" in the head. We get the key and pose.
    19 Coins, 6 Lives
Time to unlock the door to Luigi! We leave the courtyeard and go upstairs into the room with the locked doors. We approach the green door with the "L". We unlock the door, Mario walks in, a drum roll starts, and out flips Luigi, who flips his cap onto his head with a fanfare. We get a message: "You've rescued Luigi! Now he can pummel the enemies with panache! You'll see green caps everywhere. If you grab one in the course, you can turn into Luigi on the spot. As Luigi, you can run over water and slip through wire fences with agility." Welcome aboard, Luigi! You'll be a great addition to the team!
The next Star is Switch Star of the Bay.

    Bowser in the Dark World

    N64
Well, it's about time we checked behind the star door and paid Bowser a visit. We walk through the door and up a short flight of stairs and see a painting of Peach. We run to the painting to save Peach, but as we approach, the picture morphs into a picture of Bowser's face. We reach an invisible wall and the floor drops away. After jumping to avoid falling in for a while, but finally fall in. We land in a place with a dark sky on a winding path over the void. We hear Bowser's laugh and he says "Bwahahaha! You've stepped right into my trap, just as I knew you would! I warn you, "Friend", watch your step!" The "Road to Bowser" music, remixed in both Galaxies, start plaing. I like this song.
We follow the narrow path and step on the switch so the blocks will appear so we can get Red Coins. Unfortunately, the switch is near a rock that periodically spews fire. The fire hit me and I ran off the level. It took me 7 takes to reach Bowser because I wanted to get the 8 Red Coins. They will give us another Star, so I decided to get them so I wouldn't have to repeat the level. They are in an order along the path. The first Red Coin is to the left of where we start, over the abyss. This isn't Galaxy, so we can't just jump out and spin back to safety. We have to leave it for now and move forward. We cross a narrow bridge and move to the area with the fire-spewing rock. We hit the switch and a block appears nearby. It appears under one of the Red Coins. When the fire isn't spewing, we get the coin. After that, we hit the switch again and head back to where we started and walk on the blocks to the Red Coin. Past the switch is another fire-spewing rock in front of a slope. We can't walk up the blue side, so we have to go around. We jump onto one of the rotating platforms and jump off on the other side. There is a 1-up in the item block near the Goombas. We cross the bridge and find another Red Coin near a crystal circled by an Amp. As we continue, there is a yellow platform sliding back and forth over the abyss. On the other side is a Red Coin, which we can get when the platform is under it. Nearby are circling platforms where the next Red Coin is. We have to ride around a couple of times to get it. When we make it to the safety of the stone platform, we find a narrow bridge to a circular, pointed structure. If we carefully walk across the bridge, we will find the 6th Red Coin. The 7th and 8th Red Coins are near the tilting platforms near the end of the path. We have to sidle along the narrow ledge and find it between two stone walls. There is a 1-up between a different set of walls. The last coin is on top of the ledges coming off of the stone walls. It is over the first ledge from where the tilting platforms start. We went past the tilting platforms, go back and use the tilting platforms as a ramp to the stone ledge. We then long-jump to the next stone platforms and get the last Red Coin. The Star appears at the end of the path, behind a large pipe. We make our way back across the tilting platforms and reach a checkered slope. We can't climb it, so we step on the nearby switch to turn the slope into a set of stairs, that will disappear once the timer runs out. We reach the top and get the Star. We get a message: "Wow! Another Power Star! Mario gains more courage from the power of the castle. Do you want to save? You Bet / Not now
    Star Get #38, 58 Coins, 4 Lives
We jump into the pipe and find Bowser, who says "Tough luck, Mario! Princess Toadstool isn't here... Gwa ha ha!! Go ahead -- just try to grab me by the tail! You'll never be able to swing ME around! A wimp like you won't throw me out of here! Never! Ha!" He tells us how to defeat him- we must pick him up by the tail and swing him around into one of the bombs that surround the floating battle arena. Throwing him off the arena won't do anything.
Bowser's theme starts playing. We circle Bowser until we can grab his tail and swing him around. I threw him to a nearby bomb so I could aim better. I threw him again to adjust, then threw him a short distance into the bomb. He roars and flies to the center of the arena and says "Grrr! I was a bit careless. This is not as I had planned... but I still hold the power of the Stars, and I still have Peach. Bwa ha ha! You'll get now more Stars from me! I'm not finished with you yet, but I'll let you go for now. You'll pay for this... later!" He shrinks and spins into a gold key with a Bowser shaped head. We get the key and Mario poses with it. This key opens the door to the basement, which is where we'll continue our adventure.
    Nintendo DS
We need Mario for this mission since Yoshi can't do the job. We approach the Star Door and Mario pulls out a Star to unlock the door. We get the message: "The Power Stars have broken the lock Bwoser put on the Star Door. Now anyone can enter the door." The door slides open and reveals a short flight of stairs to a painting of Peach. If this is anything like what happens in Mario's painting, we should find her here. As we approach, the face in the painting turns from Peach into Bowser. The floor drops away, and we fall in. The same music plays and Bowser gives the same speech, without the quotations marks around "friend".
There is an item block where we can get a Power Flower and float over to other parts of the path. We got the Red Coin near the fire-spewing rock, but the flames hit us. We got the Red Coin near the start, but walked off.
Take 2- We got the Red Coin near the flames and were burned twice off the level. Take 3- We got the first two coins, and were burned once. We move up to where the Goombas where we get a 1-up in the item block. We get the third Red Coin by the crystal and the Amp. The fourth and fifth coins are in the same place as in the N64. We fell off after the fifth coin.
Take 4- We got one coin and fell off from a burn.
Take 5- We get the first two coins without incident. We take two hits from Goombas and get a 1-up. We also get coins 3-6 without issue and got another 1-up. We take a hit from an Amp twice after we get the 6th coin. We sidled from the side closer to the pipe to get the seventh coin. We got a 1-up on top of the stone platform from the stone wall. We got the 8th Red Coin and the Star appears behind the pipe. We got another 1-up jumping toward the switch. We activate the switch to generate the stairs and we get the Star. We get a message: "Wow! Another Power Star! You're getting stronger from the power of the castle. Do you want to save? You bet / Not now
    Star Get #44, 50 Coins, 6 Lives
Near where the Star was is a Star Switch. The Star Sphere is next to where the last Red Coin was. Each Bowser mission on the Nintendo DS will have a Red Coin Star and a Switch Star. We activate the switch and slide off the level. Take 6- As we already have the Red Coin Star, we use the Power Flower to float near the Star Sphere. We go up the stairs, activate the Star Switch, and go back down the stairs. We just ran out of time to get the Switch Star. We get two 1-ups. We got the Switch Star with ease on the second try. Star Get #45, 11 Coins, 7 Lives At the top of the stairs is a sign: "Watch out for Bowser's flames! To beat him, get behind him and grab his tail by pressing (A)! Spin him around with the (Control Pad) before you send him flying. The faster you spin him, the farther he'll go! Or use the Wrist Strap's thumb pad on the Touch Screen to spin him more smoothly! Take a good look aroudn with the arrows on the Touch Screen. Find the spiked orbs in the corners. To defeat Bowser, throw him into one. Aim carefully and press (A) to fling him far, far away." Good to know. Let's save Peach. We go into the pipe.
Bowser approaches, with an updated sprite. He says "Tough luck! Looks like Princess Toadstool isn't here... Gwa ha ha!! Go ahead -- just try to grab me by the tail! You'll never be able to swing ME around! A wimp like you could never throw me out by circling the Touch Screen. Never! Gwa ha ha!!" Once again, he tells us how to beat him. The Bowser theme is still the same.
We have 8 orbs to use to defeat him, however, we can be damaged by them, should we run into them. We throw him twice and the second throw was into an orb. He flies to the center of the arena, squirming like a turtle on its back. He says "Grrr! I was a bit careless. This is not what I had planned... But I stilll hold the power of the Stars... AND I still have Peach. Gwa ha ha! You'll get no more Stars from me! I'm not done with you yet, but I'll let you go for now. You'll pay for this... later! Gwa ha ha!" He shrinks and spins into puffs of smokes. A key shaped like the one in the N64 version appears, but this one is swirled with white. We get it and Mario poses with the key. We can now open the door to the basement.
The next mission is The Key to Luigi.

    Big Boo's Haunt - Big Boo's Balcony

    N64
We need to go to the top of the house to get this Star. We go up to the second floor and through the 5th door on the left. We wall jump up to the third floor and go through the double doors near the Blue Coin Switch. We go onto the balcony outside and find Big Boo. We ground pound him to get in three hits, with the glitch still working. After the third hit, the Star flies onto the roof. It is somewhat difficult to reach the roof from where we are. I tried backflipping onto the roof, but it didn't work. I frequently fell off the balcony. Finally, after taking damage from a chair and a Boo trying to get coins to recover health, we long-jumped to the roof on the side. We slowly walk to the top of the roof and slid down the roof to the middle part of the roof, over the balcony, with an item block with a 1-up. The Star is further out on the ledge.
    Star Get #37, 18 Coins, 7 Lives
    Nintendo DS
After taking a couple of hits from the Boos in the courtyard, I took out a couple of Boos, including one with a Luigi Cap. We go to the same room on the second floor and backflip to the third floor with Luigi's higher jump. We go through the double doors to the balcony. We get in the first hit, and the glitch still works. We purposely run into Big Boo to get rid of Luigi's Cap. We get in the last two hits and the Star flies to the roof. On the balcony is an item block with a Power Flower, so we can easily float to the Star. We get the 1-up from the item block on the roof and get the Star closer to the edge.
    Star Get #43, 30 Coins, 5 Lives
The next mission is Bowser in the Dark World.

Big Boo's Haunt - Seek the 8 Red Coins

    N64
We have to find the 8 Red Coins hidden in the house. One of the Red Coins is in the 1st door on the left, in the room with the piano. I was attacked by the piano, but recovered with the Red Coin. Through the next door, we find 2 more Red Coins on the bookshelves. I took a hit from Mr. I and went through the 4th door. I fell off the bridge many times and took some hits from a Boo, so I got another coin in through the 5th door. I fell and came back. I went to the 2nd floor and found a Red Coin through the 3rd door on the left on the edge of the grating and fell to the 1st floor. On the 2nd floor throught the 4th door are 6 coffins. The coffins lift up, revealing 2 Red Coins under the closest coffin on the right and the middle coffin on the left. The last Red Coin is through the 5th door, around the corner, at the edge of the tilting floor. The Star appears on the 2nd floor on the left side.
    Star Get #36, 16 Coins, 6 Lives
    Nintendo DS
We need to be Mario to get this Star. Seven of the Red Coins are in the same location as in the N64 version. The coin under the middle left coffin is now floating high above the foyer. After we get the Red Coin near the tilting floor, we exit through the nearby door and find an item block which gives us a Power Flower. We float up to the Red Coin to get it, and float over to the Star, which is in the same place as in the N64.
    Star Get #42, 21 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Big Boo's Balcony.

Big Boo's Haunt - Secret of the Haunted Books

N64 We go into the house and up to the 2nd floor. In the 2nd door on the left is one of the libraries. Some of the books fly off the shelf to the other shelf, to attack us. We go around the corner to find three books sticking out of the shelf. We have to hit them in order or suffer a hit from a book. I got it wrong the first time, but the correct order is middle, right, and left. We jump to push the books in. After we hear a chime, the book shelf slides away to reveal a door. It leads to the balcony in the room with the piano. Over the balcony is the Star. Star Get #35, 0 Coins, 6 Lives Nintendo DS We enter the house, go up the stairs, and through the 2nd door on the right. There are books flying between the shelves to attack us. We take two hits and get around the corner and find the books sticking out. We push them in in the order middle, right, and left, and the chime sounds. The bookshelf slides away, revealing a door into the room with the piano and the Star. The balcony is surrounded by glass instead of a railing. Star Get #41, 0 Coins, 4 Lives The next Star is Seek the 8 Red Coins.

    Big Boo's Haunt - Ride Big Boo's Merry-Go-Round

    N64
I decided to get 100 Coins in this mission. I got lots of Blue Coins from Mr. I and Boos. I also wall-jumped up to the third floor for the Blue Coin Switch. We can get more coins from the spiders outside as well as an item block and a crazy block.
    Star Get #33, 100 Coins, 4 Lives
For the mission, we went into the small house to the left of the mansion. We take the elevator down to a flooded hallway. We go through two doors and find ourselves near the merry-go-round. We hear the carousel music and go through the door. There are several pictures of Boos, one of which spews fire, and the floor rotates. Boos will come out of the pictures, so we defeat them. After we kill all five, we hear a chime and Big Boo comes out. There is a slight glitch, in that before we land a ground pound, Big Boo will react as if he took a hit. We get in three hits to defeat him and the Star appears. The floor stops moving and the Star appears in front of one of the doors.
    Star Get #34, 125 Coins, 6 Lives
    Nintendo DS
I decided to get 100 Coins in this mission, as well. I got five from the crazy box. I got more coins from the item block and the spiders. I went through the back door to find the Boos that appear through the painting, and found one wearing a green cap. Luigi must be near! I don't need it for now, so I let it be. I got more Blue Coins from Mr. I. Another Boo in the house is wearing a green cap, and I accidentally picked it up and turned into Luigi. I took three hits from a Boo and lost the cap. In the foyer, a Bob-omb Buddy says "Green caps are all the rage now. I see them everywhere! In fact, I think I just saw one!", drawing our attention to the map. We go up to teh second floor and take out another Mr. I. Through the second door to the right, we find a Power Flower and float to the third floor. Through that door, we find a picture of Luigi! We'll deal with that a little later, but now we know where to find him. There is a Blue Coin Switch up there, as well. We leave the mansion and go to the small house to the right. We take damage from the Mr. I and defeat him for another Blue Coin. We fall through the elevator shaft (we tripped it while trying to run around Mr. I) and take damage. We go through the flooded hallways and reach the carousel. We take 5 hits from the Boos and get the 100 Coin Star.
    Star Get #39, 102 Coins, 4 Lives
We take out all five Boos and Big Boo appears with the chime. Beating him is easy- we take him out with 3 ground pounds, and he glitches once. The Star appears in the doorway.
    Star Get #40, 112 Coins, 6 Lives
The next Star is Secret of the Haunted Books.

Big Boo's Haunt - Go on a Ghost Hunt

Big Boo's Haunt is the fifth course.
    N64
In the courtyard is a big Boo. If we punch or pound the big Boo, a small carousel cage appears. If we approach the cage, we enter Big Boo's Haunt. Creepy, low-pitched music starts playing. We get a message: "Come on in here... ...heh, heh, heh..." Periodically, we here the sounds of Boo laughter. There is a large mansion in front of us, with Big Boo waiting on the roof. We go inside the house. The first door on the left has a piano. The next door has a couple of bookcases and a large painting of a Boo. If we turn our back to the painting, Boos will appear from it. I ground-pounded the two Boos that came out. With each Boo we take out, we'll get the message: "Ghosts... ...don't... ...DIE! Heh, heh, heh! Can you get out of here... ...alive?" Each Boo has a blue coin we can get when we take them out. The door next to that has another Boo, as well as a Mr. Eye. I took a hit from Mr. Eye and defeated it by running around it in a circle while the iris and pupil follow Mario. The next door has a fallaway bridge with Boo. But the Boo is on the other side of the bridge, and I fell off it twice. You won't die from falling off the bridge, you'll just land in the water near the carousel with the carousel music playing. We swam around to the shallow water, and walked to the metal door in the brick wall. We enter a flooded hallway and took a grate elevator up into the small house near the mansion, with a Mr. Eye. We took out the Boo once we finally made it across the bridge. The door next to that also contains a Boo. Once we take out all 5 Boos, we get a message: "Boooooo-m! Here comes the master of mischief, the tower of terror, the Big Goo! Kahahaha..." We hear a chime and the tempo of the music goes up. We go back into the foyer to find the Big Boo in the center of the room. We turn our back to him and ground-pound the Big Boo when he gets close. Big Boo makes the same sound as the Whomp King and Big Bob-omb when they are hit. We get in three hits. The Star flies to the 2nd floor and stairs appear in the center of the foyer. We ride the stairs to the 2nd floor. We hear a chime. We tried to get 100 coins, but gave up, after taking damage from flying books, and Mr. Eye, so we just got the Star.
    Star Get #32, 70 Coins, 5 Lives
    Nintendo DS
As Yoshi can't hurt Boos, we need Mario to get this Star. We access the course the same way as in the N64. We see a red item block on the balcony instead of the Big Boo, but otherwise not much has changed. We enter the mansion. We go through the second door on the left. We take a hit from a flying chair, and take out a Boo from the painting. The message is the same (minus some ellipses). We take a hit from the other Boo from the painting, then take it out. We get the last three Boos without incident, in the same rooms as in the N64. We get a similar message: "Boooooo-m! Here comes the master of mischief, the titan of terror, the Big Boo! Ha ha ha ha..." The tempo of the music goes up. We go back into the foyer and find Big Boo, with an updated sprite. We get in the first two hits, but Big Boo doesn't make much noise. We take a hit from Big Boo and get in the last hit. He poofs into the Star, which flies to the second floor. We ride the stairs to the second floor and get the Star.
    Star Get #38, 25 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Ride Big Boo's Merry-Go-Round.

    Boos' 8 Red Coins

This Star is unique to the Nintendo DS.
We return to the courtyard to get the Red Coins from the Boos. We can't use Yoshi, because he can't defeat Boos. If he eats one, he gets a message saying "You...can't...EAT... ghosts! Eee hee hee!" He will then spit the Boo out. He can't even ground-pound them. One of the nearby signs says "Pssst! The Boos are super shy. If you look them in the eyes, they fade away. They reappear when you turn your back, so don't let them sneak up on you! It's no use trying to hit them when they're fading away. Instead, sneak up from behind and punch them. You can't swallow Boos, so this is where you'll need a mustached hero to save the day."
So we'll use Mario. We take a hit from a Boo, then ground-pound it to get its Red Coin. Not all Boos have Red Coins, so you can just look for the ones with Red Coins or just attack any and all of them. Just ignore the Big Boo for now. He doesn't have any coins. We take 5 hits from the Boos and get all 8 Red Coins, listening to them scream. The Star appears in the back of the courtyard.
    Star Get #37, 19 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Go on a Ghost Hunt.

Battle Fort - The Secret of Battle Fort

This mission is unique to the Nintendo DS.
We go through the wooden doorway from the foyer into a long hallway, where a large Boo waits. It moves to the back of the hallway. The door there leads to the courtyard, where a lot of Boos hang out. Not much has changed from the N64 version, except that some Boos have Red Coins and there are bricks near the right wall. Underneath the bricks ia grate. We punch the bricks with Mario because Yoshi can't break bricks. Doing so reveals a hole, which takes us to the Battle Fort. The slide music starts playing. We see five Silver Stars on the map. One of them is hidden the corner brick in the corner to the right of where we landed. We take a hit from a Goomba and chase after our Silver Star, recovering it quickly. Another one is hidden in the Goomba near the pole at the base of the fort. There is another Silver Star hidden in a brick closest to the corner to the left of where we started. The fourth one we found was in the corner across from where we started, a Goomba near the corner bricks. The last one we found was at the top of the pole on the opposite side of the grate bridge. We missed it at first and took fall damage. In the corner where we started, on the top level, is the Star Sphere with the Star. We crossed the bridge quickly and carefully to get it.
    Star Get #36, 8 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Boos' 8 Red Coins.

Goomboss Battle - The Switch Star

This is a mission unique to the Nintendo DS.
There are other missions to complete inside the Mario painting. If we go in as Mario, we can complete one of these missions. We slide down the trunk and head to the right. We land in the haze and take damage. We walk up the narrow slope and take out the Piranha Plant. We jump across three of the four gray tilting platforms and land near where we came in. We take out the Goombas to clear the runway. At the end is a tall metal cage with a Heart. We need to reach the top of the cage, so we need to do wall-jumps (wall kicks). A sign near the cage explains "Hop onto high places with the wall kick. Just jump at a wall, then jump again when you hit the wall. Keep in mind that only the superhero with the red cap can pull this move off." Near the Star Switch is another sign: "In front of you is a Star Switch. Step on it to make a Star appear in the course. Hurry to collect the Star before it disappears! Don't forget that you can check the Star's location on the Touch Screen map."
We step on the Star Switch and the Star appears at the top of the ledge inside the metal cage. We run to the cage and wall jump up until we land on the grassy ledge. We run to the Star Sphere and break it for the Star. We get a message: "Wow! Another Power Star! You're getting stronger from the power of the castle. Do you want to save? You bet / Not now
    Star Get #35, 6 Coins, 7 Lives
Since we are not warped out, we decide to see how Goomboss is doing. After falling in the haze and being hit by a Goomba, we fall into the trunk to see Goomboss. He says "You're Mario!!! What are you doing here?! My underlings locked you up in that room. Never mind. I'll deal with you myself! Now I will trample you as you have trampled us!"
The Goombas appear in front of him this time, so we can punch them into Goomboss. We get trampled by Goomboss, taking four bars of damage. We fell into the haze trying to get aroung them, but punched two Goombas into him. We run into Goomboss, but get in a hit from behind. We take more damage, but get in the last hit we need. Goomboss says "Aaaaauuuuuuurrghhh! I am so angry I am cooking in my own succulent juices! The Goombas have lost... Again?! Is this our destiny?! To be trampled by oppressive feet for all eternity? No, we will definitely triumph next time! Yes, next time! The Goombas' fate is not defeat, but perseverance!"
He explodes into the key once again. We get the key and warp out. We can't do anything special with the key because we already unlocked the door.
The next Star is the Secret of Battle Fort.

    The Princess's Secret Slide

    N64
Through the top door to the right from the foyer is a tower with three stain-glass windows of the Princess. There is a note from Peach that says "Mario!! My castle is in great peril. I know that Bowser is the cause... and I know that only you can stop him! The doors in the castle that have been sealed by Bowser can be opened only with Star Power. But there are secret paths in the castle that Bowser hasn't found. One of those paths is in this room. and it holds one of the castle's Secret Stars! Find that Secret Star, Mario! It will help you on your quest. Please, Mario, you have to help us! Retrieve all of the Power Stars in the castle and free us from this awful prison! Please!"
Okay, Peach. We're working on it. The window to the right holds the Secret Slide. The slide music starts playing. We land in a room at the top of the slide and trigger the Blue Coin Switch to the right. We start sliding down the slide, which loops around frequently and loses its guard rails. I make it to the end with a time of 0'29"9. There is a Star in the item block.
    Star Get #30, 80 Coins, 4 Lives
We get a message: "You've recovered 30 Power Stars! Now you can open the door with the big Star! But before you move on, how is it going other wise? Did you pound the two columns down? You didn't lose your hat, did you? If you did, you'll have to stomp on the condor to get it back! They say that Bowser has sneaked out of the Sea and into the underground. Have you finally cornered him?"
The answers to the questions are "It's going fine" for the first question and "No" to the rest. This is what happens when you try to get as many Stars as possible before taking on Bowser.
If we go into the Secret Slide again, we can get another Star if we reach the end in under 21 seconds. We do so with a time of 0'20"8. We're cutting it close here. To go faster, push the control stick forward and avoid touching edges or walls. There is a point where the slide doubles over on itself. If you jump off at the right spot, you can skip part of the slide, shedding seconds off your time. This is easier to line up with the DS's Touch Screen map. We didn't risk the jump. If you, at any point, reach the end of the slide in under 21 seconds, the Star will appear just as you cross the finish line. Get that Star first, if you haven't gotten the one in the item block. Getting either Star will cause you to warp back to the foyer and have to slide again.
    Star Get #31, 25 Coins, 4 Lives

    Nintendo DS
We go into the room with the four bordered doors and the stain-glass windows. There are only two windows here, but the slide is in the one on the right. The sign says "My castle is in great peril!! I know it's because of Bowser again. Will he never tire of terrorizing us? He stole the castle's Power Stars and disappeared into the walls along with us! Retrieve all of the Power Stars from the walls and the paintings in the castle. Here is a hint: there are secret paths in this room, and one of them leads to a Secret Star! Find the Secret Star! It will help you on your quest."
We jump into the window and land at the top of the slide with the slide music playing. We hit the Blue Coin Switch and start sliding. We get lots of coins and a 1-up. We reach the end with a time of 0'20"72, so the Star appears as we cross the finish line. We get that one and ignore the one in the item block.
    Star Get 33, 63 Coins, 5 Lives
We jump in again to get the Star in the item block. We hit the Blue Coins Switch, get lots of coins and another 1-up. We finish with a time of 0'24"83. We hit the item block for the Star.
    Star Get #34, 71 Coins, 7 Lives
The next Star is the Switch Star in Goomboss Battle.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Mario's Super Wall Kick

This is a renamed mission unique to the Nintendo DS.
When they put a character's name in the title, you need that character to complete the mission. You may use the caps. We warp down to the base of the mountain. We take the rope lift with updated sprite, to the floating island. The Bob-omb Buddy opens the cannon for us and we check out the nearby sign: "Danger! Strong Gusts! But the wind makes a comfy ride." We long jump off the island and the wind picks us up and drops Mario head first into the snow. We aim at the middle of the rock above the tree. We make it across safely. I have also seen people jump off of a Spindrift and spin down and land on the other side of the gap. We punch the Spindrifts on the not-as-narrow ledge. We long-jump across the next gap and backflip up the ledge. The Heart is still there so we can recover health. We miss the first wall jump, then double jump, then wall jump, but jump away from the mountain and slide off.
Take 2- We launch from the cannon and make it back to the wall kick area. We backflip to the first ledge, then triple jump, then wall jump onto the above ledge. We walk across the not-as-narrow ice bridge and get the Star.
    Star Get #32, 8 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is The Princess's Secret Slide.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Wall Kicks Will Work

This is a mission unique to the N64. This mission exists under a different name in the Nintendo DS.
We land and the top of the mountain and warp down to the base. We took the rope lift to the floating island with the Bob-omb Buddy and had him open the cannon. We then fell off of the island.
Take 2- We warped down to the base to find that the cannon was still open. We aimed above the tree, but missed and fell.
Take 3- We used the cannon and aimed for the rock above the tree. We landed safely and sidled across a narrow ledge, taking damage from a Spindrift. There are a bunch of coins in an arrow formation pointing across a large gap. We long jump across it and come across the real challenge. We past a Heart and backflip onto the ledge above. We then have to wall-jump (wall kick) off the wall onto the ledge above. This took me about 27 tries, and I took lots of damage from falling, which is why the heart is there. Once up on the ledge, I walked across a narrow ice bridge to the Star.
    Star Get #28, 7 Coins, 3 Lives

Cool, Cool Mountain - Snowman's Lost His Head

    N64
Just past the cabing on a wooden platform near a Spindrift is a body of a snowman. It says "I need a good head on my shoulders. Do you know of anybody in need of a good body? Please! I'll follow you if you do!" After talking to us, the body will immediately start rolling down the mountain, snowballing as it goes. We have to slide in front of it so we can guide it to the head at the end of the mountain slide. We go up to the head who says "Ooooo Nooooo! Talk about out-of-body experiences -- my body has melted away!Have you run into any head hunters lately?? I could sure use a new body! Brrr! My face might freeze like this!"
His face isn't very expressive, but it still seems sad. Soon after, the body rolled down the mountain and missed the head. We crossed the snowman bridge, taking three hits, and warped back to the top of the mountain where the body regenerated. I missed again, but got it on my third try. I slid toward the head when I got off the mountain slide. The body rolled under the head and propped it up. We heard a chime and the head said "Perfect! What a great new body! Here -- this is a present for you. It's sure to warm you up." The head's expression doesn't change much.
The Star appears out of the head and lands nearby.
    Star Get #27, 16 Coins, 5 Lives

    Nintendo DS
We go up to the body, in the same location as in the N64 version. It gives the same speech and starts rolling. We miss the first time because we kept running into the body and fell behind. The head gives the same speech as well, but has a more distinct frown. We take three hits from the snowmen and warp to the top. We take some fall damage and start the body rolling again. We slid off the mountain.
Take 2- We accidently enter the cabin and get three 1-ups from the slide. We warp back to the top. We slid right into the snowman head's stand and waited for the body. This time was successful and it ran into the head and propped it up. The chime sounds and the snowman smiles. It gives the same speech and the Star appears.
    Star Get #31, 31 Coins, 6 Lives
The next Star is Mario's Super Wall Kick.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins

    N64
On my first take, I got 7 coins while trying to get 100 coins. I fell off when I tried to open the cannon on the floating isle and the lift back to the ground took off without me.
Take 2- See the first take.
Take 3- See the first take, but I got 3 coins.
Take 4- I got the first coin at the top of the mountain near the little penguin. I warped to the base of the mountain and found one on the bridge and another on the other side of the wall at the end of the warp bridge. The next one I found was above a tree near the mother penguin. I took the rope lift to the top, where another Red Coin waits. Along the side of the mountain is another Red Coin, past the snowman head. If you pass the snowmen on the bridge, there is another broken bridge with a Red Coin restting on it. The last Red Coin is tricky to find. I warped back to the top of the moutain and starting sliding down. When the path becomes a bridge, I jumped off toward the mountain, but tried not to slide too much down the slope. The last Red Coin is behind the stack of ice blocks. I warped back up the mountain and started sliding down again, past the bridge, where the path turns sharply that Mario may start sliding backwards. There is an edge at the turn and we jump over it and find a Blue Coin Switch. Nearby is where the Star appears.
    Star Get #26, 60 Coins, 5 Lives

    Nintendo DS
You need Yoshi for this mission. You cannot complete it without him. The Red Coins are in the same location, but two are frozen in ice blocks. The one at the top of the mountain is frozen. There is a fire nearby. Yoshi can stick his tongue into the fire and breathe one breath of fire. Oddly, we slid down the mountain, landing where the other frozen Red Coin is, where we jumped off the slide to get to in the N64 version. We breathe fire to melt the ice block and get the Red Coin. The other ice blocks will not fall on you. We get a 1-up from the item block. We jump off the ledge and find the next Red Coin at the base of the mountain slide near the Bob-omb Buddy. We grap the Red Coin at the top of the rope lift and cross the snowman bridge, taking a couple of hits. We get the next one near the broken bridge. We get the next two by the warp and another one in the tree, while waking up Hoo. Hoo takes us to the top of the mountain. We melt the ice block at the top for the last Red Coin. We check the map and jump off the mountain, landing near the Star.
    Star Get #30, 19 Coins, 4 Lives
We get a message: "You've recovered 30 Power Stars! Now you can open the door with the big Star! But before you move on... Let's just check some things. Did you rescue poor, frightened Luigi? Did you pound the 2 colummns down? I heard that Bowser snuck out of the sea and went underground. Looks like you finally cornered him!
The answer to the 2 questions is no. We haven't even beaten Bowser for the first time yet with the way I'm going. We haven't even found Bowser in the sea, nor heard from Luigi. We'll take care of that. This is just what happens when you play the game in a different order and get more Stars than the game designers planned per check point. Let's keep going!
The next Star is Snowman's Lost His Head.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Big Penguin Race

    N64
When we go through the chimney, we find a penguin at the start of the slide while the slide music plays. It says "Hey-ey, Mario, buddy, how zit goin'? Step right up. You look like a fast sleddin' kind of guy. I know speed when I see it, yes siree -- I'm the world champion sledder, you know. Whaddya say? How about a race? Ready... Go/Don't go
This mission took me several tries- 28 in total. I kept falling off the slide and dying. I tried taking the secret path, but at the end, the Penguin said "Whoa, Mario, pal, you aren't trying to cheat, are you? Shortcuts aren't allowed. Now, I know that you know better. You're disqualified! Next time, play fair!" Oh, well, let's try that again.
When I finally made it, the penguin said "You brrrr-oke my record! Unbelievable! I knew that you were the coolest. Now you've proven that you're also the fastest! I can't award you a gold medal, but here, take this Star instead. You've earned it!"
What is with penguins mentioning that we deserve gold medals, but giving us Stars?
    Star Get #25, 38 Coins, 4 Lives

    Nintendo DS
We find the penguin at the beginning of the slide, but he doesn't greet us by name. He says "I'm the world-champion sledder!!! I may be bulky, but I'm very fast! How about a race? Ready... Go!!/ No thanks
We start the race. I beat him on my third try, but fell off the slide my first two tries. He says "You brr-oke my record! Unbelievable! I heard you were the coolest. Now you've proven that you're also the fastest! I can't give you a gold medal, but here, take this Star instead. You've earned it!" The Star appears behind him.
    Star Get #29, 69 Coins, 3 Lives
The next Star is Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Li'l Penguin Lost

    N64
At the top of the mountain near the cabin is the lost penguin. We pick it up and it starts crying. We slide with it down the mountain and take damage from the snowmen. If Mario gets hurt while carrying the penguin, he will drop it, so be careful and pick up the penguin immediately. At the base of the mountain, in the lake by the cabin, we find a large penguin. It is crying, but when we hand over the penguin, says "Youo found my precious, precious baby! Where have you been? How can I ever thank you, Mario? Oh, I do have this... ...Star. Here, take it with my eternal gratitude. The Star comes out of the mother penguin's back.
    Star Get #24, 13 Coins, 11 Lives

    Nintendo DS
By this point, you should have gotten Mario. You need him for this mission. To be exact, you can't use Yoshi (as himself) here. If he tries to pick up the penguin (by eating it), the penguin will say "Ayiiieee! Please don't eat me. I promise that I don't taste good. Plus, I'll give you cavities." Yoshi will then spit the penguin out. We enter the course as Mario and grab the penguin. Unfortunately, the warp at the top of the mountain doesn't work when you're holding the penguin. Fortunately, with the map on the Touch Screen, we can determine a place where we can jump off the mountain and land near the mother penguin to make our lives easier. We pound the ground to avoid taking damage, but we let go of the penguin. We pick it up again and deliver it to the mother penguin, who stands outside the lake. She tells us "You found my precious, precious baby! Where have you been? How can I ever thank you? Oh, I do have this Star. Here, take it with my eternal gratitude." The Star appears from her stomach.
    Star Get #28, 0 Coins, 4 Lives
The next Star is Big Penguin Race.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Slip Slidin' Away

Cool, Cool Mountain is the fourth course.
    N64
We find ourselves in a room with three paintings of snowmen. We go through the middle one. When we land on this wintery floating island, we get a message: "Snow Mountain Summit Watch for slippery conditions! Please enter the cttage first." We check out the sign near the cottage which says "Santa Claus isn't the only one who can go down a chimney! Come on in -- Cabin Proprietor"
We climb in through the chimney. Inside is an enormous slide and the sliding music starts playing. We start sliding and go through the secret passageway near the first wall marked with a line of coins going into it. We hear a chime and get a 1-up on the way. We land on the ledge in the cabin at the base of the mountain. There is an item block with a 1-up on the ledge. We go out the door and the Star appears.
    Star Get #23, 16 Coins, 11 Lives
I later came back to get 100 Coins. I got them by getting most of the coins on the slide, which brought me 71 coins. I warped back up the mountain and slide down the slope for the remaining coins.
    Star Get #29, 103 Coins, 3 Lives

    Nintendo DS
We're going to get the 100 Coin Star in this mission. We get the same message upon entering. But first, we're going to slide down the mountain first for coins. I got a couple of Red Coins and took three hits from snowmen and a Goomba. I then warped to the top of the mountain so we could enter the cabin. The sign says "Welcome to the slide! Hop on and take a ride! When sliding in Standard Mode, press Up on the (Control Pad) to accelerate. to decelerate, press Down on (Control Pad). Use the Touch Screen to turn more smoothly than the (Control Pad). The slide music starts playing and we start sliding. I fell off the slide.
Take 2- I decide to go down the slide first. I reach the end with 77 coins. I left the cabin and the Star appeared. I took a couple of hits from Goombas. I still need 100 Coins, so I warped to the top. I got the 100 Coin Star at the bottom of the mountain slide.
    Star Get #26, 101 Coins, 3 Lives
I returned to the base of the mountain for the mission Star.
    Star Get #27, 101 Coins, 5 Lives
The next Star is Li'l Penguin Lost.
