There are some spike balls surrounded by snake platforms. Stand on top of them to make coins appear. To the right are rolling spike balls, impeded by snake platforms. A brick block to the right has the potential to become a Gold Block if your timing is good enough to deal with the firebar nearby. Jump over the gaps, being aware that spike balls will drop from the ceiling. The first Star Coin is near the ceiling. Wall jump over to reach it. The P-Switch below it makes Silver Coins. Avoid the spike balls and stay on the snake platforms to reach the midpoint. Jump off before the snake platform goes in the gap. With great timing, drop down into the pit with the giant spike ball and the second Star Coin. As you continue, there will be more spike balls falling from the ceiling. Past the double firebar is a red pipe. It leads to the third Star Coin. Hop on the snake platforms coming in from the right, being aware that spike balls will be rolling on them. Keep jumping to higher platforms to reach the third Star Coin and go through the green pipe above it. Just before the boss door is a maze of snake platforms and giant spike balls. There is an alcove below. On the right wall next to the boss door is an invisible block with a powerup, should you need it. Morton Koopa Jr. appears, and uses magic to make spike balls appear. Hit him to send him into his shell cycle and he'll go off screen on the floor. He'll soon reappear from a green pipe overhead. Be sure to jump when he lands, as he'll stun you. Get the key once you defeat him. The wall will open to reveal Ludwig von Koopa taking Peach to World 5.

New Super Mario Bros. 2: 4-5
Before taking the pipe underwater, stand on the ledge to the right to make coins appear. There are coins trailing the Cheep-Cheep as well. There is a random item block, so try your luck at getting a Gold Flower. That or a Fire Flower will be very helpful, as there are man-eating giant Cheep-Cheep in the water. Throughout are blue pipes with currents pushing you to the right. Above one of them is a yellow pipe that takes you to the first Star Coin. It's in the middle of a current pushing up. Jump out of the water and pound the ground to reach it. Before you reach the midpoint, there will be a random coin block and a giant Cheep-Cheep. To the right are Red Coins and, below them, a yellow pipe blocked by brick blocks. If you have the Gold Flower, you can access this pipe. It leads to a room with brick blocks that can be turned into quick cash. The pipe to the right takes you directly to the second Star Coin, but you can't quite reach it. Go to the right, up the left side, then the right, go left, and down to reach it. There will be a giant Cheep-Cheep waiting for you at the top, as well as a Starman in the middle item block. After you take out the Cheep-Cheep to the right, go through the green pipe below. The current from the blue pipe prevents you from getting the third Star Coin, so hit the ? Switch above. Leave the area and go through the green pipe at the end for the flag.

This level features mushroom platforming in the snow. Fortunately, there isn't much slipping and sliding. Past the first few mushrooms are some balancing platforms. Over the left part of the balance with a lot of coins is the first Star Coin. Stand on the right side to raise the left side, then jump up from the left side to get it. The platforms will reappear shortly if they fall. Climb up the mushrooms for a Gold Ring. Next to it is a Koopa and below it is a brick block. Hit the brick block with the shell to make a vine appear. There are some rocking pink mushrooms, three stationary mushrooms, and the second Star Coin above them. You'll drop back down near the midpoint. There are some Red Coins over the next set of mushrooms. Past the Red Coins are two sets of balances. Raise the platform on one side of the lower balance to reach the higher balance. Jump from the right side of the higher balance for the third Star Coin. Soon after is the flag.

New Super Mario Bros. 2: 4-C
The Fuzzies return! Fortunately, they are susceptible to fire, so bring a Fire Flower along. Follow the arrow underground. Hit the POW blocks for a powerup and some coins. Jump across the gaps carefully. The pointed ground will not hurt you, but the Fuzzies will. Kill the Fuzzy floating around the brick blocks and jump off the brick blocks for the first Star Coin. Hitting the POW will allow you to get a 1-up. Carefully hit the POW blocks in the middle of the looping Fuzzies. Just beyond them is the midpoint. Wall jump up the ceiling for more coins. There are platforms on paths next. Two Fuzzies are also on the paths, so hit the POW blocks and avoid them. Once at the top, go left, defeat or avoid the giant Fuzzy, and go through the green pipe on the left. Wait until all of the Fuzzies are near the middle and hit both of the POW blocks simultaneously for a 1-up. Jump up on the used blocks to get the second Star Coin. To the left, just past the platform, are four brick blocks. The far right one has a P-Switch that makes Silver Coins. Go up the platform and go right. The next platform has five Fuzzies on its path, so time your jump and move around. The area to the left has a random coin block and a giant Fuzzy. The path to the right has two giant Fuzzies. Take them out and go past the pipe. Wall jump up to the ceiling and the third Star Coin. Go through the green pipe. The stairs have gaps with Fuzzies in them. They are avoidable, but standing in the gaps makes coins appear. The flag is nearby.

Time to slide! Activate the Gold Ring and send the Koopa shell down the hill, sliding down after it. Be sure to jump over the gaps with the Piranha Plants. At the bottom of the hill, the shell will break a brick block at the end and ricochet back, so be careful. Slide and duck through the gap to reach the first Star Coin. Go up the hill and kill off the Piranha Plants before attempting to get the Red Coins. The midpoint is ahead on some floating ice blocks. Next is the second Star Coin over some Piranhas. Take them out, then run and jump for it. Carefully platform up the ice blocks with Piranhas. The Fire Flower is very helpful here. At the top, you'll see a P-Switch which makes Silver Coins down the slope ahead. Follow the trail if you like, but be sure to backtrack. There is a floating plot of ice near the top of the hill. Slide, then jump on the plot to reach the third Star Coin floating high in the sky. Go down the blue pipe guarded by two Piranhas for a random coin block guarded by three Piranhas, one of which is giant. Back on the main level, there's another giant Piranha just in front of the ice stairs to the flag.

New Super Mario Bros. 2: 4-Fort
This Fort has a rising floor. There will be skulled Piranha Plants in pipes in the walls, so don't slide around too much. Some Piranha Plants will be on the floor and join you as the floor rises. There are two random coin blocks on the way. Between two Piranhas is the first Star Coin. Above them is a mini pipe to the second Star Coin. Go through the door at the top. It leads to the midpoint and another door to a similar room with a rising floor. As you go up, there will be two fire pipes. The left one will give you three 1-ups. The right one will give you a Starman, so take out those Piranhas. There's a giant one ahead of you. Above it is the third Star Coin. If you go through the blue pipe on the left on the same level as the giant Piranha Plant, you'll go through another pipe to the Red Goal, which leads to 4-C. If you don't, go through the door at the top and take the pipe cannon to the boss door. This time, there are four Reznor, but on two ferris wheels. Take them out as usually, being careful when jumping to the next wheel. After you defeat them, Morton Koopa Jr. appears and takes Peach to the castle. The path opens to 4-3.

Time to go underground. We have to deal with Amps and icy surfaces, so things could get difficult. There is a Gold Block in the second ring with an Amp. In the next ring, follow the Amps in a clockwise circle to get the first Star Coin at the bottom of the loop. There are Red Coins in another ring of Amps. The midpoint is next to that Ring. Go down the lowest blue pipe and you'll enter a room with a random item block and a POW. Jump on the bricks and hit the POW above it for coins, then the POW below it. Once out of the pipe, pound the tall stack of bricks and slide. Directly above where you stop is the second Star Coin, in an alcove above a ring of four Amps. The third Star Coin is below a double ring of Amps. Drop down from the dounut lifts carefully and jump up to get it. The pipe to the flag is next.

This level returns us to the snow. There is a Gold Block to the right of the first red pipe. Jump from the second red pipe for the first Star Coin. Past the random coin block, there are two pipes hanging from above. Wall jump up them and hit the middle block between them for a 1-up. Do not hit any of the other invisible blocks so you can get it. Go right for the midpoint. There will be a red pipe close to the ground between two red pipes. Go through that pipe and use the Buzzy Beetle shell to break the brick block so you can drop down. The shell will continue to activate the POW blocks below, so run quickly and jump for the second Star Coin. Once out of the area, activate the Gold Ring and kill Piranha Plants to make coins come from their pipes. The third Star Coin is next to a pipe with a Piranha Plant. Take the Koopa shell nearby and throw it at the Star Coin. The flag is nearby.

New Super Mario Bros. 2: 4-A
To access this level, use five Star Coins in front of the 1-up House. This level features springy pink mushrooms. Making matters more difficult is the fact that the enemies (namely Goombas) also bounce off the mushrooms. So will the coins. Go right, then break the brick blocks to go down and left for the first Star Coin. Just move; jumping will bounce you over the platform. Keep going right, and you'll see some Red Coins. Next, you'll see a blue pipe making infinite Goombas and a green pipe next to it. It's a cannon. The item block on the left will fly away and has a 1-up. The right brick block can become a Gold Block. You'll drop down on the midpoint. Go right and you'll find the second Star Coin high between two blue pipes over a pink mushroom. You can't reach it on your own, so wait for the Goombas to start bouncing on the mushroom and bounce off one to get it. Coins will soon appear from below. Past the red pipe is an item block level with the platform. Pound it to make a Mini Mushroom appear and head to the right. Follow it past some blue pipes and get it, then go under the pipes for the third Star Coin. Go right and coins will appear from below all of the pink mushrooms. Next is the flag.

The item blocks won't move away from you, but they will float up and down. Go up all the stairs; the first door is fake. Step down to the floor and the walls will close in. They are being controlled by Boos and can change direction at any time. As the walls move right, you'll come across parts of the floor that rise. Stand on the far right part of the floor to make it rise to the ceiling. The walls will move to the left, revealing the first Star Coin. The floor will drop away once you get it. The walls will move right again. Wall jump up the left moving wall once past the rising platform that takes you to the first Star Coin to reach a door overhead. It will take you a giant Boo and the Red Goal, which leads to 4-B. If you don't go for the Red Goal, you'll see a Red Coin Ring. The Red Coins will appear sequentially with other coins. The walls will be close enough for you to wall jump, so do so continuously after you pass the last Red Coin for the second Star Coin, which is near the ceiling. Drop down and you'll see a P-Switch. It produces Silver Coins. Quickly go up the next area. When you reach the spring, go left immediately for the third Star Coin. The left wall will block it off. Spring up to the next level, as the walls will soon close in on you. Wall jump up the left side to reach a door. It leads to a room filled with coins. The walls will soon close in, so jump up to the door. You'll drop down near the flag, with a spring. This leads to 4-2.

New Super Mario Bros. 2: 4-1
World 4 is a winter world, so some platforms may be icy. This level is filled with snow, Micro Goombas, and rocks. The rocks are damaging, so go over them. Where there is a rope overhead, the first Star Coin is below with four rocks. Either be quick, or wait until you get a certain item to destroy the rocks. To the right, a rock will drop down and roll to the right. Get on the platforms above and quickly go to the right. You'll see two brick blocks in the rock's path. Take a Koopa shell or use a Raccoon Tail to hit the block to the right. It has a Gold Flower, which can destroy the rocks. Go back left. On the middle platform, there is an invisible block. Hit it and jump on it to reach a higher platform that you couldn't see before. There's a P-Switch that makes Silver Coins over this platform. Hop on the platforms to the right to reach the second Star Coin. Carefully drop down to the midpoint. Rocks will be rolling down nearby, so be careful. To avoid some of them, one of which is giant, go through the blue pipe. It will take you to an icy room with on rock and a random coin block. Go through the top pipe to the left. Wait until the rocks go by and hop up the mountain. At the top, get a running start and jump to the left for coins and the third Star Coin. There's a Gold Ring at the top of the mountain, so activate it and get some coins. The brick block on the mountain has a 1-up. Beware that if you send the Koopa shell down the mountain, it will rebound. There's also a rock at the base of the mountain. Just past it is the flag.

New Super Mario Bros.: 4-Castle
It's time for another castle! This one has pendulums with platforms with Dry Bones that we can walk on. The pendulums will get very close to each other, so just wait instead of just jumping whenever. If you run up the third pendulum, using it as a ramp, you can reach the first Star Coin. Next are a few large Thwomps. The first one is over the second Star Coin, which is under some stone blocks. Approach the Thwomp to make it drop down and crush each row of blocks. Then drop down to get it. Then run under a series of Thwomps to reach the midpoint. From here until the boss door are pendulums. Under the first from the midpoint is the third Star Coin, so drop down to get it. The boss is a giant Goomba. You can use fireballs or hit the ? Switch to make green springing platforms appear for a limited time. The platforms will rise up to the level of the top of the Goomba when you stand on them. The ? Switch will still be available after the platforms disappear, so you can get the platforms any time. Ground pound the giant Goomba three times to defeat it. Bowser Jr. takes Princess Peach off to the fort of World 5.

It's another purple water level. To help us cross the water, Dorrie returns. She will duck under platforms, so you may have to climb on them to avoid being pushed off into the water. There's a Red Coin ring near the platform with the first Star Coin. The Red Coins go under the platform as well as over, so you'll have to double back to get them all. You'll have to go over the platform with the Piranha Plants. The second Star Coin is past the P-Switch, which you must use to reach it. It will turn coins into brick blocks, giving you platforms. The ! Switch will allow you to go up a green pipe, where you'll find the third Star Coin in a coin formation after you slide down. There is a 1-up near the pipe. You'll end up near the pipe to the flagpole. The path to the castle will open up.

New Super Mario Bros.: 4-5
We take a pipe to go underground. We land on a mushroom and find the path blocked by some stone blocks shaped like stairs. Above them is a pipe with an endless supply of Bob-ombs so you can blow up the blocks. We'll be doing a lot of that here. We pass the midpoint without finding any Star Coins. The first Star Coin is encased in stone blocks, so have a Bob-omb destroy the blocks so you can reach it. Be careful not to blow up too much of the floor. Next is a series of drawbridges. The second Star Coin is surrounded by brick blocks above the second drawbridge, so hit the brick block under the Bob-omb walking around, and let it explode some blocks. Then use the drawbridge as a ramp and jump up through the gap to get it. Under one of the later drawbridges is a pipe covered with stone blocks. Carefully drop a Bob-omb down there, then enter the pipe. It will take you to the third Star Coin. In the last part of the level, there will be Spinies crawling on the ceiling, so watch out for them. At the end is a pipe to the flagpole, which opens the way to 4-6.

New Super Mario Bros.: 4-Ghost House
This Ghost House can be a little complicated. Near where you start is a door on a lower platform. You'll find an orange ? Switch which will make four item blocks drop down from the ceiling on springs. The second from the left will give you a power up. While they're still in the room, hop on one of the item blocks and it will pull you into another part of the Ghost House when the timer stops. To the right, you will find the first Star Coin. Throughout the Ghost House are yellow platforms with red stripes. If you stand on one, it will take you around the wall into the next room, but will not take you back. Here, you'll find a special type of ghost, called a Balloon Boo. They won't attack you if you face them and will follow you when your back is turned, like a normal Boo, but when you look at them, they start inhaling air and increasing in size, but deflate while chasing you. A ! Switch will make a door to a new room appear. Another ! Switch will make red platforms appear. Wall jump up them for the second Star Coin. From there, you can take the pipe up and over into a new room. Take the high door to the flagpole. To get the third Star Coin and access to the cannon, on the pipe you need red blocks to reach, stand on the pipe as Mini Mario. Wall jump up and to the right to a narrow area. Wall jump up that to see a door. Before entering the door, wall jump up higher to reach the third Star Coin. The door will take you to the red flag goal.

New Super Mario Bros.: 4-A
To unlock this level, you need 5 Star Coins. There is purple water in this level. To help us get around, there are vines to swing on and platforms that function like a paddle wheel. We've seen them before in World 3, but we have to be careful not to touch the purple water. There are two of them before the midpoint. Making life difficult are Paratroopas. The first Star Coin is between a red and a green Paratroopa. Nearby is a vine. Bounce off the first green Paratroopa after the first Star Coin to the vine above to reach a pipe. There, you will find Koopas trapped in brick blocks with the second Star Coin. There is a P-Switch that will turn the brick blocks into coins so you can reach it and get coins. The pipe at the end will return you to the main level. This part has Piranha Plants in it. There is a set of three pipes: green, yellow, green. Enter the first green pipe to reach the third Star Coin. To reach the flagpole, take the vine at the end to the pipe, then another vine to the platform in front of the flagpole. This will open a path to the Ghost House.

New Super Mario Bros.: 4-Fort
Once again, we have to deal with Bowser Jr. There is lava below the floor in the first area. We have to use the moving stone slabs as stairs to reach the door. In this room, the lava rises, so you have to climb quickly and carefully. Making things a little more difficult is the grates we have to climb. When the path forks, take the grates on the left and flip the grate to reach the first Star Coin. The second Star Coin is higher up, between two Amps. Near the midpoint are stone slabs with spikes. There is a long, horizontal stone slab over smaller slabs. The third Star Coin is over that. There are some Red Coins that require jumping from grate to grate. Keep climbing grates to reach the boss door. Bowser Jr. is wearing his mask with sharp teeth, which means stomping on him is impossible. He will go into his spiky shell if Mario tries to land on him. To defeat him, either use fireballs, or stop the shells he throws and fire them back at him three times to defeat him. Once defeated, he takes Peach to the castle.

It's another water level. Take the pipe down to the water, where the level is an automatic sidescroller. This level is crawling with Unagi, some above, some below, and some in the rocks. The first Star Coin is under a ledge. There are Red Coins in the water. The second Star Coin is between two Unagi in rocks, so time your swimming to avoid them. There will be an orange ? Switch that stops the currents near some pipes. Take the last green pipe down and avoid two Unagi in rocks, go left, then down, to reach the third Star Coin. Go back up and you'll find four Unagi in rocks near the pipe to the flag. There is a Goomba on the staircase.

This level takes us away from the purple water to an area with lots of mushroom platforms. In this level, the purple mushrooms tilt to the side you're standing on. If you stand on one too long while it's tilting, you will slide off. At the end of a ledge, a brick block has a 1-up. We get hte first Star Coin by wall jumping. The second Star Coin is nearby, so make a purple mushroom tilt so you can reach it. There are Red Coins in this level. There is another ledge with a brick block. Tilt a mushroom so you can go under the brick block to hit it for a vine. This will take you to the third Star Coin, obtainable once you hit another block with a vine. The pipe will return you to the main level. There is a tilting mushroom just before the flagpole.

World 4 is a forest world, with lots of purple water to avoid. 4-1 is no different. We have to stay out of the purple water while avoiding spiders dangling over the gap. When there are two spiders dangling over the purple water, bounce off both of them and jump high to reach the first Star Coin. Just past the midpoint is Dorrie, the dinosaur we met in Super Mario 64. She can survive in the purple water and ferry us across it. We'll have to either duck under some platforms or go over them to avoid being knocked off. You'll find the second Star Coin over the second spider over here. To get it, jump from the blocks. The Dorrie eventually stops, and we continue on foot. There are donut lifts and more spiders. The third Star Coin is near the end, so we go under the lower set of blocks to reach it. Just before the flagpole is another dangling spider.
